Overview

“The Projects” is the second book in Wesley Gurion’s Boyhood Trilogy, following “Howard Street Days.” This is the continuation of young Wesley Gurion’s story of growing up in the Sixties.

It is 1967, and Wesley and Danny’s family move to a Los Angeles lower income housing project. It is there that the brothers meet the incredible Kennedy Hunter, an older boy with infinite ideas about how to live a creative and fun life. Boyhood supercharged! When they aren’t riding on the tops of elevators in Hollywood, or scrambling beneath the catwalks on the Pacific Ocean Park amusement pier, Kennedy and Wesley are engaged in an endeavor to write and draw superhero comics in the style of their beloved Marvel Comics. Twelve at the beginning of the book, by the age of fifteen Wesley’s interest in comic books and sandlot adventures slowly turns to that most wonderful of mysteries, girls.

“The Projects” is the centerpiece of Wesley Gurion’s Boyhood Trilogy. A massive work, illustrated with a hundred original drawings from the Kennedy/Wesley archive, “The Projects” is written with clear memory and feel for a time in America long gone. If you were there you will tingle with warm memory, and if you weren’t, you soon will be.

After “The Projects,” be sure to read the final book in the Trilogy, “Bolinas.”
