Overview

Before the release of THE PROMISE, the buzz surrounding this five-member Christian "boy band" was palpable, so it was somewhat of a relief to finally hear their impressive debut. Plus One comes complete with all of the glossy trappings you'd expect -- good looks, polished R&B voices, and shiny production. The difference, of course, is the message: While Plus One's resemblance to 'N Sync is obvious, it's unlikely we'll hear those pop princes singing a song called "God Is In this Place." Why no one thought of putting together a boy band for the Christian market earlier is anyone's guess, but now that they have, we can be thankful this project was handled with integrity. What could have been a cheesy exercise in making a fast buck instead is an impressive pop debut, thanks to the vocal talents of the group's five members and the crack team of producers and songwriters that came on board. Pop mastermind David Foster works his magic on several cuts, including the title track and the lovely ballad "My Friend." Buster & Shavoni, whose credits include the PRINCE OF EGYPT soundtrack, turn out a groove-heavy dance number, "My Life." Most of these songs discuss God's faithfulness in the broadest of strokes, with lyrics vague enough not to scare off mainstream radio outlets, a likely next step for these guys -- after all, they already have a solid radio hit in "Written on My Heart." Move over 'N Sync and Backstreet Boys -- Plus One are ready to join the club. Lisa Zhito

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Heather Phares
Plus One's debut album The Promise proves that the CCM quintet are just as talented as their secular boy-band counterparts. The smooth harmonies and clean pop production on songs like "When Your Spirit Gets Weak," "Here in My Heart," "God Is in This Place," and the title track are especially enjoyable highlights from this strong first effort.
