Overview

This year, 200,000 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. An even greater number will seek help for problems caused by prostate enlargement and inflammation. This book is for them - and for the wives, sisters, and daughters who often take responsibility for educating men about health matters and encouraging them to see a physician. Written by the world-renowned Johns Hopkins surgeon who devised the new, nerve-sparing surgical procedure for treating prostate cancer (generally known as the "Walsh procedure") and an award-winning medical writer, here is an accessible and authoritative resource about the three most common prostate disorders: prostate cancer; benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH, commonly known as enlarged prostate); and prostatitis (inflammation of the prostate). After explaining the anatomy and functions of the male urinary and reproductive systems, the book describes symptoms, diagnostic procedures, and medical and surgical treatment for the major prostate disorders. The controversial "watchful waiting" approach to treatment is also thoroughly discussed. The authors offer advice on how to choose a surgeon, what to expect before and after surgery, and when to call the doctor if problems develop. To make the book as easy to use as possible, the authors have included chapter summaries, stories about the experiences of individual patients and their families, and explanatory tables and charts. A complete glossary of terms and detailed illustrations of anatomy and medical procedures by noted medical illustrator Leon Schlossberg are also included.

"...offers complete coverage of treatments, including radical prostatectomy, radiation, cryoablation...also includes anatomic illustrations."

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
"Every three minutes, a new case of prostate cancer is diagnosed in the United States. Every 15 minutes, a man dies from it." Thus, the message of this book that "most prostate trouble can be preventedand, if caught early enough, all prostate problems can be cured, even cancer"is good news indeed. State-of-the-art medical knowledge is provided by Johns Hopkins Urologist-in-Chief Walsh, clearly written by science writer Worthington, and informatively illustrated by Leon Schlossberg. The authors acknowledge that "medical care in this country is uneven," so their goal is "for you to come away from this book informed, prepared and able to discuss your situation intelligently with your doctor." This comprehensive reference on the prostate and its disorders complementsand surpassesSylvan Meyer and Seymour C. Nash's recent case study approach in Prostate Cancer: Making Survival Decisions (LJ 11/15/94).James Swanton, Albert Einstein Coll. of Medicine, New York

    Excellent Medical Overview

Prostate cancer is the second killer of men in the US apart from skin cancer. Dr. Walsh deserves plaudits for his poineering work in prostate surgery that while removimg the cancerous prostate prevents impotence and incontince. In some respects the book is overly technical but that does not distract from his point that we need to be mindful of the possibility of prostate porblems and be screened at least once a year. This screening would include a physical with DRE and the PSA test. The PSA test remains controversial but is still the best measure for suggesting that further evaluation of the prostate by a urologist is a prudent course of action when the PSA level is above normal (4.0). I can speak first hand on this matter. I'm 49 and during a recent physical my PSA was found to be 5.4. I was referred to a urologist who did a needle biopsy. The test results were thankfully negative (about 70-percent of all prostate biopsies are negative)but Dr. Walsh's book gave me no peace on this. Unlike other cancers porstate cancers do not 'lump', instead they spread out like thin sheet of plankton floating on the ocean. Even if your biopsy is negative he recommends having the PSA tested every six months--my family physican and I are opting for every three months. Dr. Walsh while supporting PSA screening points out some problems with the test. There are cases where men with a PSA of 2.0 have had cancer and men with 17.5 have no cancer present even in the face of repeated biopsies. This doesn't make the test unrelaible, it just means further evaluation is necessary in conjunction with the PSA. If you buy this book expecting it to tell you how to lower your PSA or prevent cancer with diet, exercise and natural treatments like Saw Palmetto, don't waste your money--this book is written by a medical doctor and he only states known medical facts. There are a number of other good books and articles available on prevention. This book also details the treatment options when the biopsy is positive. The main point is early detection means the disease is curable--so get that annual check-up with the PSA test--it may just save your life--I hope that it does!
