A new tale of danger and desire from national bestselling author Shiloh Walker featuring psychic FBI Agent Vaughnne MacMeans…

AN ASSIGNMENT SHE CAN’T REFUSE

Agent Vaughnne MacMeans would do anything to avoid setting foot in Orlando again. But her new assignment, keeping tabs on a psychic kid who may or may not be in danger, is forcing her right back to the city where her sister was murdered. And she didn’t count on a startling attraction to the boy’s guardian…

AN ATTRACTION HE CAN’T DENY

Protecting Alex is a priority for Gus. Gus may not understand the young man’s “gift” but he knows that some people would kill for it. When a beautiful stranger moves in next door, his impulse is to take the kid and bolt. But Gus has learned never to flee without a plan, and besides…she doesn’t exactly look like an assassin.

A GAME THEY’LL PLAY FOR KEEPS

But when some dangerous people from Gus’s past do catch up to him and Alex, it’s too late to run. His new neighbor is the last person he thought he could turn to, but Vaughnne isn’t just beautiful. She’s fearless. And she’s the only chance Gus and Alex have left.

    4 1/2 stars

"The Protected" by Shiloh Walker is part of the enthralling `FBI Psychics' series and features people with extraordinary mental abilities. Vaughnne MacMeans appeared in a previous story in this series and has had very traumatic experiences that she is trying to recuperate from. She reluctantly accepts an assignment to `babysit' a pair of individuals who aren't to know about her task but she is shocked to realize that her mental skills will be sorely tested by an ostensibly simple duty. Gus Hernandez and his young relative are shockingly tense and exhausted but their wary tolerance of their new neighbor is overridden by the danger that she seems to represent. Vaughnne's reluctant attraction to both of them is tempered by her assessment that they represent just as much danger to her. The question becomes whether their alliance will be more harm than help and whether they will all survive to work out their relationship.

I am a big fan of stories that feature those with extraordinary mental capabilities so this is a series that appeals to me immensely. Combine that with Shiloh Walker's ability to create remarkably intense and unique characters who are extremely memorable and I am an extremely happy reader. I love the way there are cameos by some of the intriguing people from previous tales and I definitely hope there will be additional books that feature some of the secondary players from this story. Gus' young charge is a fascinating combination of powerhouse and impressionable kid who is being honed by all of the stresses he is under and one wonders whether he will shatter from the pressure or get polished into an invaluable diamond. The amazing powers that are described encompass quite a range of abilities and the enigmatic Mr. Taylor Jones continues to manipulate the resources at his command and frustrate his agents, whetting one's appetite for more hints about his background. I always look forward to more works from this talented author and this book is a wonderful example of her ability to create a vivid and enthralling story and I can only hope that the series continues to grow.

In The Protected by Shiloh Walker, Vaughnne is a psychic FBI age

In The Protected by Shiloh Walker, Vaughnne is a psychic FBI agent, part of a little known specialized group of FBI agents. She has been off on medical leave, recovering from her last case which was very traumatic for her. Now Vaughnne is back and her boss Jones has her heading back to the last place she wants to go - back to Orlando, Florida, to 'babysit' a boy who may or may not have people after him and who may or may not have special gifts. Her task is to make sure he's safe and keep him safe. Vaughnne doesn't have a lot of information or who and why's about the case...but once she's there she's drawn in further and further to what is turning out to be a complicated and very dangerous situation.

Working undercover, Vaughnne does not expect to feel the attraction she does to the boy Alex's guardian Gus. They are obviously very careful, used to running, and Gus seems like he's a lot more than meets the eye. Gus is determined to keep Alex safe at all costs, from whoever is hunting him, no matter what. He trusts no one, and is not afraid to kill to protect.

When the hunt draws closer and danger is on their doorstep, Gus might have no choice but to trust Vaughnn to help keep Alex safe. Because Alex is way more gifted than either of them expected, inadvertently a magnet to the people hunting him. To do what needs to be done though, Vaughnn has to open herself up to Gus, trust in him as she wants him to trust in her. If they make it out alive and can keep Alex safe, do they have any kind of future together...or will Gus continue to run?

Shiloh Walker gives us a thrilling, intense read with The Protected. It was a book I couldn't wait to get back to, but also one I needed to totally focus on! Gus and Vaughnne are both very strong, independent, and stubborn people. Gus will do whatever he needs to do no matter what, to protect Alex...and he's not afraid to use the intense chemistry between him and Vaughnne to try to get his own way! He is very focussed, even though after years of running and constantly being on a high state of alert, he's so tired. Vaughnne can see this in both Gus and Alex. She wants to keep them both safe, and at the same time help Alex with his gift. It's hard for her to get Gus to trust and accept, but she's not giving up! They've both had major hurts in the past that push them to do what they are doing today.

I loved all of the other characters in The Protected as well. There were a lot of them, and all that psychic energy like I said was very intense, sucking you right into the story. Shiloh has a unique way of drawing you in, making you feel like you are right there with the characters. I really enjoy how she can write a such a vivid, suspenseful romance, add in a healthy dose of paranormal, and make it all very believable. It took a while for the whole story of Alex and Gus to come out, but that was part of the suspense and build up of the plot.

I highly recommend The Protected by Shiloh Walker to any romance reader who likes a lot of suspense and paranormal! While I believe The Protected can be read alone, reading the rest of the FBI series makes The Protected even more meaningful.

~Reviewed by FRANCESCA & posted at Under the Covers Book Blog

I’ve been fascinated with the concept of this series for a while now.  Psychic paranormal romance, people with mental powers….right up my alley.  Some books in this series, I admit, I like more than others.  But THE PROTECTED nailed everything I love about this genre!

This book had intrigue, action, betrayal, sensual tension.  Did I mention the cool superpowers?  And a kid.  I love kids in stories!  They bring the whole thing together!!!

Gus has been protecting his nephew, Alex, for years.  His sister left him in charge of caring for her son, who happens to be the child of a bad man.  And the reason he’s protecting him is because Alex is beyond powerful and his father wants him.  He’s been on the run for a while, changing towns, changing names, being careful.

Until he starts liking the neighbor across the street.  Little does he know that Vaughnne is there on assignment to protect the kid.

Again, this story was just prfect!  Action packed, with a story that kept me intrigued and interested.  Pulse pounding sexual chemistry between Gus and Vaughnne.  I couldn’t have asked for more from Ms. Walker.  I hope to see much more from this series in the future!

The Protected is the second book I have read by Shiloh Walker. I have to admit I was completely hooked after I read the first book I read, but WOW, this book was just as good as The Reunited. Ms. Walker is an extremely talented author with amazing skills at creating very unique and creative characters.

Vaughnne MacMeans has been assigned the task of watching over a gifted child,  Alex. Alex is in great danger, he has not had an easy childhood and has experienced tremendous loss. Gus has been protecting Alex and will do whatever it takes to keep him safe. These two have led a very dramatic life and are in need of help, even if they don't know it. There is a lot of mystery that unfolds as the story goes on. I'm not going to go into too many details but wow Alex has been through so much and he is such a special young man.

Vaughnne  and Gus form a strong connection instantly. Gus doesn't know if he can trust Vaughnne  but it doesn't take him long to find out that he really should trust her. Gus has taken care of Alex for so long on his own, he doesn't trust anyone but himself with Alex's safety.

Vaughnne has been through a lot as well. When she joins forces with Gus there is nothing that can stand in their way of protecting Alex and making sure he stays safe. I really enjoyed Gus and Vaughnne's story. Not only are the sparks between these two completely intense, they both have some mystery to their past, that adds a little more intrigue to their story.

The Protected is full of drama, intrigue, mystery, and some pretty steamy scenes. I loved the abilities  of everyone on this very intriguing FBI  Psychics team. Ms. Walker has created a very interesting bunch of characters that I can't wait to read more about. My favorite thing about series books is that I get to catch up with characters I have read about before. There were several characters in this story that I had met in The Reunited. I do have to say you do not have to have read the whole series to enjoy each book on it's own. I have only read these two books and I had no problem following along. Now that I have been introduced to this talented author's work, I know I will certainly be on the look out for more.

    4 1/2 Stars too!
I highly recommend this book and pretty much every other book written by Shiloh Walker!
Of this FBI Psychics series created by Shiloh Walker, this is my favorite book only second to the first one, "The Missing"!
I could not put this book down! I only stopped reading because it was 3 something in the morning and my eyes were literally hurting.
I was enthralled with the hero and the heroine though the situation where Gus puts Vaughnne in a very bad situation I could have gone without & for her to not even slap him after that - I don't know if that was realistic (Yes, I am acting as though these are real people) - but the chemistry and the loyalty shown in this book is what great stories are made of.
Another thing about Shiloh Walker's books is her always bringing prior characters forward. I loved that we see Taylor, Taige and Joss in this story and where they are in their lives!
I loved this book and I really am looking forward to the next one.
    And now to my complaints
One, I really wish the book had been 100 - 300 pages longer. There were three primary characters and I feel I needed just a little bit more - especially on Gus & Alex. Reading the prior comments, I can understand why the reader may not have felt a connection to Gus and that was needed (of course skimming didn't help) - I did feel a connection because I read and re-read the book and whenever a piece was introduced I went back to a bookmark that didn't really make sense the first time I read it.
The two sub characters Nalini & Tucker also had me wanting more! One minute Tucker is in the story and the next minute he just drops off the face of the planet...for the remainder of the book, I keep asking myself if this was the chapter where Tucker show back up and Nalini - how bad was it? How is it affecting her? What happens now? Will she now be a part of the family?
    And Esteban - Really?
Lastly, I really need there to be and Epilogue and then an upcoming scene from the next book regarding Tucker and Nalini - though I know a lot of my issues are probably with the publisher who cuts, edits and controls and not the author I still was left wanting.

    Not good

    ## The synopsis sounded so good....boy was I disappointed. The story was so convoluted. Way too many POVs. I found myself so bored I had to skim a lot of it. The hero (and I use this term lightly), ugh, he was awful. Arrogant, cocky, rude and mean are some of the words that come to mind. He treated the heroine so badly, it was difficult for me to fathom her falling in love with this guy. Between drugging her and putting a gun to her head several times, this guy was a real prince (insert sarcasm here). Sorry, I can't recommend this book and frankly I'm mad I wasted so much money on it.
