    Best book ever

I have read and reread this book many times, and have loved it each and everytime. You are transported back in time and become part of the book. I have never read a book that if I had to set it down I would think about it till I could pick it back up.It is so hard for me to read the end of the book, because I hated finishing it. Excellent book and characters, very well written. Would have loved to have seen this one made into a movie

Long, sprawling historical work, akin to the Thornbirds but set in California (and IMO, better written).
Sixteen year old Teresa Maria Julietta Margarita Macleod y Amarista, granddaughter of a proud Californio
tradition, stabs, then nurses and falls in love with Gavin Ramsay, Yankee trader. (We don't see that kind
    of romantic introduction much!)

We see the unusual partnership with Gavin's half Indian, half Negro friend, "Indian," and travel with them
through the days of the ranchos, to the gold mining camps, to the settlement of San Francisco and the
Civil War and beyond. There's romance, rape, betrayal, babies, gambling, war, adultery, friendship,
scandal, and through it all, Tessa and Gavin, two distinct and compelling characters, as well as two
generations of their descendants, battling for love.

Epic, in every sense of the word.

The Proud Breed is a book I never bought. In 1977 or '78, I belonged to Doubleday, Literary & some other book club so I was receiving books by mail quite frequently.. at least 2 or 3 weekly. I never paid attention to the address or name on mail arriving at my house so this particular day didn't notice that box wasn't for me. The worst part was having thrown out the packaging before realizing I'd never ordered the book.... some other poor reader was out their book & there was no way to find who it belonged to. I felt really badly about the whole deal! It wasn't a book I would've chosen but somehow I felt honor-bound to read it (don't ask - I've no clue) ................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... It wasn't many pages before I realized this was going to be a book well loved & never forgotten! Two years later I read it again, loving it even more than the first reading. Then maybe every 2 or 3 years I'd pick it up & read again, and each time - every single time - as soon as I read the first paragraph, it was like coming home again!! Ten years or so ago, it disappeared from my home but it WILL be replaced as soon as I can get my hands on a copy! The Proud Breed is NOT an *everyday, dime-a-dozen romance* book! It is literary historical fiction that just happens to be the love story between 2 of the most wonderful characters ever to be put down on the pages of a book. You will *not* regret picking up this book to read!!!

    BEST BOOK EVER!!

I have read and reread this book over the years. My mother also read and reread the book until the book is basically falling apart. It is the best book I have ever read. The feelings and emotions are so real you can feel them yourself.
