His work has been highlighted on multiple websites and published in numerous books and magazines such as Cloth Paper Scissors, Artful Blogging and CPS Studios. This is an amazing and completely original book! Seth Apter, New York City mixed media artist and psychologist (of famed mixed media blog The Altered Page), has brought together his considerable expertise in each of these fields to create "The Pulse of Mixed Media: Secrets and Passions of 100 Artists Revealed." This is NOT a 'how-to' book explaining or demonstrating mixed media art techniques. There are many, many of that genre to be found in bookstores, already! This book is an adventure that challenges the reader, artist or not, to delve deep into the psyche of the creative mind, and discover what makes it 'tick.' Thirty-one 'spotlight' artists are introduced in the book's early pages, and artwork created by these artists (both self portraits, and other pieces), is featured in the first two sections of the book: "The Artistic Ingredient," and "Passion in Action." The book's third section: "Secrets Revealed," includes artwork and/or statements by 103 additional artists created around a series of specific themes ( such as : "Can you share a secret?"; "What expresses the innermost you?; "What is your biggest fear?"), suggested as artistic questions by the author.
Throughout all three sections, artist-written responses to a far-reaching variety of questions about their art, and about the creative process, illuminate these areas, and extend understanding for the reader about the creative mind at work (and at play!). In the final analysis, Seth Apter's "The Pulse of Mixed Media," is an inspired meditation on art and artists that becomes far more than the sum of it's individual parts. The vision behind this book, and it's realization, is simply a continuation of that which it's author has been doing for years on The Altered Page: creating community among, and connection between, mixed media artists the world over.
