Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Nancy Garhan Attebury
Charles snuggles up to Buddy, the family puppy, as his family travels to visit his cousins, aunt, and uncle for Thanksgiving. The family loves dogs, and they welcome foster dogs until they can be placed with other people but they kept Buddy as a pup of their own. In this book from "The Puppy Place" series, a stranger surprises everyone when he drops a puppy that was running on the highway by the house of Charles's relatives and asks them to keep it. The stranger is off in a hurry, and the family is stunned. Soon Becky, Charles' adventurous cousin, is searching for clues to find the pup's owners. She drags Charles along, even though he's a bit out of his comfort zone, and she gathers clues as they go. A vet trip shows no microchip for identifying the owners. In the course of events, Charles meets the new owners of the country store, and an ice storm makes traveling impossible. This book has a reading level of grade 2.6 and offers a warm tale of adventure and "puppy" love for children who like animals. The country setting holds charm, as well as mystery. All characters show compassion and intelligence when it comes to helping a lost animal. In addition, the personalities of the main kid characters balance each other well, adding to the book's appeal. The series has many well-written books about a variety of puppies. Reviewer: Nancy Garhan Attebury
