Overview

This story is seen through the eyes of a young widow, Samantha Jamison, an author, as she revisits her husband’s past to solve the mystery surrounding his questionable death. Having always lived in his shadow, her emotional shock is evident in the loss of her husband, Stephen, her marriage, and her life, which she discovers was all a façade. Sam's rambling on the pages and anxious incoherent thoughts, constant questions and second-guessing herself threatens to overwhelm her. But Sam gradually evolves, and much to her surprise, she finds herself obsessed just like her husband was as she tries to solve The Puzzle. Her personal involvement changes everything. By solving this complicated puzzle, Sam alters her future when she discovers the truth about who was responsible for Stephen's death and why.
AUTHOR'S NOTE: Originally, The Puzzle was meant to be a standalone novel, but by the end of this mystery, I knew I wasn’t finished telling Sam’s story. It would continue in a series along with several of the characters she befriends. I once owned a log home in Highlands and felt it was a great location with those beautiful but mysterious mountains as a backdrop for Sam's intriguing story. I remember sitting out on our back porch considering what a great isolated place it was for an author to get caught up in her own unexpected mystery. Many events in this novel actually did happen, including that frightening ice storm.

Meet the Author

After years of mentally ignoring certain voices and their personal stories in her head that were interfering with her daily life, Peggy finally let them have their say, especially after her future protagonist, Samantha, finally gave her an ultimatum of either putting it all down on paper, or it could get ugly. Recognizing the alternative might not be pretty; Peggy finally gave in and has been fortunate enough to do so ever since. Now and then when they are all sitting around Peggy’s imaginary mental table arguing with her and vying for her attention to air their grievances, Peggy still finds herself putting her foot down. After all, who’s the author here, right? Peggy’s main goal is to entertain her readers and hopefully distract them for a few hours getting lost in the pages of her imaginary world of her amateur sleuth, Samantha Jamison. Peggy has three sons, lives with her husband and miniature Schnauzer, and spends time between Buck’s County, PA and South Florida.

    About 300 pages

This free, over 300 page novel, is the first book by the athor and the first book of a series. There is an excerpt of the next book at the end. This novel is very well edited, I only noticed four mistakes in the entire book. That is better then I can do, even on a review, as I am not a very good one finger typer, and I am always in too much a hurry to properly proof. This book was good, it had more twists then a rattlesnake on a hot pavement. There was some rather mild violence, no cursing or sex, a whole bunch of death and an unfinished primary plot. I loved the characters in this book. They were well rounded and realistic. The reason I did not give this book five stars is because at times it was slow going, the lap top plot which went on for ever and lead nowhere, the one unfinished plot, about adoption, which was integral to the story, (the author flew off in another direction altogether,) which made the main death unbelievable and without purpose, everyone in this novel lost partners/spouses and/ or grandparents/parents/ guardians to death ( which was too many for one book), the interaction with Clay became tedious and the conclusion was barely adequate. For a first book this was an impressive effort. I read the excerpt and I could tell the next book is very much improved. I think this author will become a big name in mystery fiction at some point, if she keeps with it. I did enjoy this book. It was chick lit, mystery. Readers, ages 16 and up would find this book enjoyable. I look forward to reading the next book and when this author becomes well known, I will be honored to say I read her when....

    Let down

This book started well but lost momentum about halfway through. It seemed like it would be a great mystery but all leads fizzled out into nothing. I found myself getting bored and eager for the conclusion, which then turned out to be a let down.

This story hooked me right away. I did find the end a little anticlimactic. The story seemed to be lacking some details with parts of the plot. Overall I did enjoy it.

A really good story, and very well written!  Colorful characters and wonderful ebb and flow kept me glued to each chapter.  Was sad to see there wasn't a part 2 yet as I wanted it directly after finishing this one.

    Fair

This story dragged on and on. At times it was very boring and went off on tangents that never really got answers. Then there was a laptop that went on and on abd suddenly....it wasnt important anymore? Then the ending felt so rushed as if the author had to finish within a certain amount of pages. Too boring to give it more than two stars. Wouldnt recommend.
