About the Author

Samuel A. B. Mercer was a distinguished scholar of ancient Near Eastern languages and one of the early pioneers in Egyptology in the English-speaking world. Educated at Oxford and the University of Chicago, he held academic positions in theology, Semitic studies, and Egyptology throughout his career. Mercer is best known for producing the first complete English translation of The Pyramid Texts, a monumental contribution to the study of ancient Egyptian religion and language. His work bridged the disciplines of philology, theology, and archaeology, and remains a foundational resource for scholars of ancient civilizations and religious history.
