Overview

In 1147, Queen Eleanor and King Louis VII traverse to Jerusalem for the Second Crusade. Along with her fancy bedding and wine, the wily, young queen brings five lovely and talented women—spies identified by a signature garden scent. Among them is the beautiful widow Isabella de Lacey, aka Violet, whose duty is to infiltrate Emperor Manuel’s inner circle and skillfully extract information. Will he aid the queen’s cousin or betray the alliance for one with the Turks? To find out Isabella must woo the emperor’s man, Raoul, whose soul is as black as his eyes and passion both terrifies and captivates her. Set in Constantinople, this historical romance is the first in a series about the clandestine network of female spies beholden only to the powerful Eleanor of Aquitaine.

I liked this book overall but I was disappointed in the ending. It seemed very rushed--after spending several previous chapters describing events lasting a few hours, the final chapter covered what supposedly happened in 3 days time by having the 2 main characters give each other a short briefing. It felt unfinished but the overall story was good. Not sure if I would want to continue the series, the other spies did not seem as interesting as Bella.

I thought this was a great book! Hall does a good job of developing the mystery side of the plot in a way to keep you guessing about who really is or isn't a bad guy (though in politics I suppose that's all relative). And she kept me wondering up to the end how the 2 main characters were going to end up together. I look forward to reading more in this series to see what happens to the other girls and to see how she develops the 'bigger' story of Queen Eleanor.

Another good read by Miss Hall. Some of the grammer used was not something I thought would be said during this time period but Miss Hall did mention using creative license. Other than that it was very interesting, the women were portrayed as strong willed and just as able to defend royalty as well and even better than men! Can't wait for the other books to come out for this series....

Ms. Hall has recreated history, adding a tumultuous love affair to the very realistic Constantinople setting. She brings the Second Crusade to the 21st century!
