This is a story about the fourth summer of the X-Raiders, a group of typical boys 12 to 14 years of age and their attempt to become men. They were forced to stretch the limits of the lines of authority imposed on them by the parents, adults in general (Biggies) and their culture. The setting is a small town in western Oklahoma in the waning years of the Second World War. A time long past when people were extremely patriotic, caring and steeped in their conservative protestant religion. The boys were ornery as are all boys, but they were also fiercely loyal to one another and demanded honesty and justice. The Raiders always used code names when conversing with other Raiders in meetings and on raids or in an operational mode. However, for this narrative I will use pseudo names for ease of reading, clarity and to protect the guilty..
