Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Ten familiar fairy tales are retold in a simple, lively style, slightly altering traditional language such as the Great Big Bear, the Middle-Sized Bear, and the Small Baby Bear, but retaining the basic plots. Some of the repetitive rhythm is lost, but nevertheless the text reads aloud in a vivid and sprightly manner. Other entries include "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Gingerbread Man," "The Three Little Pigs," "The Magic Cooking Pot," "The Little Red Hen," "Lazy Jack," "The Three Billy Goats Gruff," "Chicken Little," and "The Shoemaker and the Elves." The large, attractive format, with crisp typography; brightly bordered pages; and charming, witty illustrations in cheerful watercolors, gives distinction to the collection. The figures, although somewhat cartoonlike in style, are wonderfully expressive. The pictures come in all sizes and shapes, from double-page spreads to vignettes, giving a sparkling visual variety to the stories. A worthwhile addition, even for libraries that have lots of fairy tales.-Patricia Pearl Dole, formerly at First Presbyterian School, Martinsville, VA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
