Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Adults know that William Shakespeare tells a good story in the midst of all that poetic Old English. Now young people (and older students who have a hard time with that Old English) can appreciate Shakespeare's storytelling prowess as well. The stories are retold with colorful and often lyrical prose by Andrew Matthews along with many of Shakespeare's most famous quotations left intact ("Out, damned spot! Will nothing make me clean!"). Matthews' introductions always provide a bit of intrigue or lay out the essence of the plot: "True love has a habit of wandering off the path and getting lost, and when that happens people's lives get lost too, in a tangle of misery"—Midsummer Night's Dream; "You want to know the story of Antony and Cleopatra? Let me tell you the story...the real story."—Antony and Cleopatra. Full-page illustrations and tiny icons add to the text in novel ways: when Lysander and Helena are running through the forest on that midsummer night, we see only their feet (which the illustrator explains in several pages of fascinating notes about the artwork); the battles in King Henry the Fifth are shown in slender panels crowded with upturned horses and soldiers. A few details have been changed—Romeo finds his poison in a chest near his bed not from the local pharmacist, but the stories are as lively and dramatic as Shakespeare intended, perfect for reading aloud or just reading before watching one of the plays. The book includes Midsummer Night's Dream, King Henry the Fifth, Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Antony and Cleopatra, Twelfth Night, Hamlet and The Tempest. 2001, Random House,

Excellent synposis of several Shakespeare plays

I flipped through this book before returning it to the children's section of the local library, and I became immersed and had to finish the whole thing in one sitting. Why is this book out of print?? This would be a great teaching aid and introduction to Shakespeare for students. In addition to bringing these plays' stories to life, the author's prose is of better literary quality that most other books that attempt to render Shakespeare for contemporary young (and not-so-young) adults.
