VOYA - Robbie Flowers
Readers will follow this title down the rabbit hole to discover the world of the real Alice who inspired Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland. The book moves seamlessly through the life of Alice Pleasance Liddell from her childhood in the halls of the University of Oxford through her final days as a woman whose name was renowned—yet she had not even considered publishing an autobiography. The Real Alice in Wonderland is simply lovely. The juxtaposed pictures of everything—from Oxford's scenery to pictures of Alice to a host of story illustrations—captivate readers and drive the story line. This is a wonderful treatment of a biography, and the format makes it widely accessible. The information is quite thorough: the reader is guided through Alice's family life as a child to her lost love with Prince Leopold and her humanitarian efforts. This offering paints a full picture of Alice, not only as the child who has captivated literature but also as a woman who was truly ahead of her time. This is a purchase that will do well with a range of people and should be offered as a standard accompaniment to Alice in Wonderland. The illustrations and pictures will make it quite popular in a public library. Reviewer: Robbie Flowers

I leafed through this book at my local Barnes & Noble, where it was on display with many Alice in Wonderland books. I could tell immediately that it was one of the most beautiful books that I had ever seen. I began to read the story, and found it so easy and clear to read, rather than a complicated biography. The text, the pictures, and the actual letters made this woman, Alice Liddell, the true inspiration for Alice in Wonderland, come to life. I couldn't put it down. I bought a copy for my wife, for my daughter who recently was married, and for my mother (which I will give her on Mother's Day). My wife read this book in 2 hours straight, and said it was one of the greatest stories she ever read. I have to say a huge thank you to the authors for giving us this book. It is a magnificent creation.

If you enjoy the story "Alice in Wonderland", owning a copy of "The Real Alice in Wonderland" is a must! I never realized the fairy tale is actually based on a real person.  The book introduces readers to Alice Liddell, a young, imaginative little girl that inspired Lewis Carroll (real name Charles Dodgson) to write his classic stories. The book shares terrific details about Alice and the many lives she touched. I didn't know it, but she even had a secret forbidden romance with Prince Leopold, son of Queen Victoria. Amazingly, she went on to later name one of her sons after the Prince, another rumored to be named after Lewis Carroll. And get this: she requested Lewis Carroll to be the Godfather to her first born child. Alice touched more than just the lives of past loves. With permission from Carroll, Alice published the original story of "Alice's Adventures Underground" and gave all proceeds to childrens' hospitals and sick children everywhere.  If you are a fan of her story in Wonderland, take this adventure in the real Alice's footsteps and discover a life more fanciful than the one described in her fictional masterpiece. The book includes never before seen portraits and scenic photography of past residences, old vacation spots, and monuments created in her honor. This book is a collection of art and memories of a woman that inspired the minds of children for generations.

I have been a fan of the Alice stories and of Carroll's poetry all my life. This book is an amazing compliment to them. Using a potpourri of intricately interwoven images, story, and historical narrative, the Real Alice creates a world every bit as colorful, dramatic, and enthralling as the world Alice found down the rabbit hole. The inspiration for a children's story is seen as an amazing woman who battled her way through difficulties and tragedy and came through triumphant, even regal. The way the book weaves together elements of Alice Liddell's life and images from the stories she inspired brings richness to both. In this case, the whole is more than the sum of the parts! No lover of Alice should be without this book. Great for coffee tables and gifts!
