Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leila Toledo
Each chapter begins as a conversational style letter with words of "My dear one," and is peppered with phrases of "My darlin'" throughout. The author has made it an easy read and makes it a point to talk to teenagers rather than at them. It emphasizes the need for a teen to look at her surroundings and how these factors attempt to influence her development. Through this book a teenager is given the opportunity to view the many questionable things hurled at her. It is a how-to manual for building a relationship with God and how to conduct one's life knowing that God has a plan for each one of us. Each chapter builds on a specific topic, for example, self-esteem, faith, hope, love, ingratitude, and fear. Included is a prayer, questions to consider, and a place for thoughts. This step-by- step process builds faith and spirituality while providing guidance in dealing with bumps along the road of life. For adults who work with teenage girls this book is an excellent study guide for a discussion group geared to assisting, not just African American girls, but all young girls in their spiritual development.
