Overview

The Civil War is shrouded in legend and mythology—but this new entry in The Real History series provides a clear, fresh view of the events for curious readers who want an intellectual, but not dryly academic, presentation of this inexhaustibly fascinating subject. Covering everything from the roots of the conflict to Reconstruction, Axelrod addresses a range of less-discussed subjects such as the efforts made to avert war (including Lincoln's initial hesitant response), the fragmentation of popular opinion in both the North and the South' and the institutional problems that afflicted the Union and Confederate Armies. Axelrod also explores the so-called “turning points” of the war and whether slavery really was the major cause of the conflict. Diary excerpts, letters, informative sidebars, and contemporary photography, art, and maps round out this absorbing, thought-provoking study.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
Praise for the Real History series:

The Real History of World War II:
“Axelrod set out to write 'a good basic book on World War II' that would be 'purposely concise, nonacademic . . . and straightforward.' He has succeeded in all respects. . . . Read[s] . . . like a novel.”—Library Journal

The Real History of the American Revolution:
“Lavishly illustrated, and intriguing sidebars . . . are interspersed throughout the text. . . . [A] lively narrative.”—Publishers Weekly

Not Your Usual Civil War Book.

This has a genuine feel of being there. From the beginning, as the Civil War progressed. Each and every nook and crany, unknown and obscure facts not given in standard account. Actual, verbatum quotes, highlighed, from famous and ordinary people in the war. Great photos. It's all in this generous book, both in fine content and number of pages. Look at this one, even if you have other Civil War books. It reads like an adventure, a story, in a personal way. I learned new, odd things in the first five pages alone. This book is a winner.
