Early on in the fourth season of American Idol the powers that be dubbed the season the battle of the rockers, because for the first time ever, AmIdol had not one but two rock vocalists as prime contenders. First, there was Constantine Maroulis, a music-theater veteran singing overheated, outdated grunge who dominated the audition rounds, becoming an early favorite. His rival didn't appear until the tail end of the auditions. His name was Bo Bice, a bearded longhair who seemed as if he stepped out of central casting for a Southern rocker. Bo catapulted to front-runner status as soon as he belted out a gritty, soulful version of "Whipping Post" in one of the first shows of the season. It was easily the hardest-rocking thing ever heard on American Idol and as the weeks went by, Bo proved that he was versatile, singing ballads as effectively as the rockers -- a feat that proved to be a bit of a stumbling block for Constantine, who truly shined only when he acknowledged his bent for theatricality, as on a startlingly good version of "Bohemian Rhapsody." Soon, that lack of versatility becameMaroulis' Achilles' heel and the battle of the rockers petered out into a competition between Bo and Carrie Underwood, a sweet girl-next-door country singer who eventually won the tightest AmIdol contest since Ruben Studdard squeaked out a victory over Clay Aiken on the second season. On Bo's album debut, The Real Thing, 19 Entertainment, exec producer Clive Davis, and the whole American Idol album crew place the singer into an alt-rock setting somewhere between Nickelback and Bon Jovi. Bo sounds like other mainstream male rock singers in 2005 -- his songs have verses that surge into anthemic choruses where heavy guitars kick in, inching the volume up to a point where it becomes a glossy wall of digital sound. The music is tightly wound and meticulously clean. While this doesn't necessarily play to Bo's strengths, there are some good, professional tunes co-written by either Jon Bon Jovi or his longtime partner Richie Sambora. Elsewhere, 19 paired him with Ben Moody from Evanescence, Ashlee Simpson's collaborator Kara DioGuardi, and Chad Kroeger from Nickelback, for a set of mildly active rock.

I cannot wait for this cd to come out. It's definitely going to be the first item on my Christmas list. This is guaranteed to be awesome.

I heard three songs on PromoSquad over the weekend: "The Real Thing", "Remember Me", and "Nothing Without You". I'm anxious to hear more! Buy it! Bo Bice is here to stay.

I hear Clive let Bo put some of his own stuff on here. This will rock:-)

I can't wait for this album. Bo is such a talented guy. He is going to do great. I have three of these already on order. One for the car, one for home and one for work...

I have this feeling it's going to be 5 star cd as well as for the title. I must be a psychic, huh? The only problem with cd's are that I can't watch Bo as he sings. Is there a chance he can put together a video of him in action? Like he did it for his American Idol presentations?:-0 That's only a part of his magic though. But I WILL get the cd for when I'm striving for a peace of mind. Thanks to Bo it's so easy to be "there" with him. He's a true Southern gent as he proved when on THE VIEW.

After listening to the clips and having heard the full length versions of many of these songs I cannot wait to get Bo's album! I would give the song Valley of Angels 5 stars alone because it is such a beautiful song. It brought tears to my eyes as I was listening to it because Bo's voice and the words to that song are simply stunning. My other favorites are Remember Me, U Make Me Better, Willing To Try and Nothing Without You. These songs are fantastic and I can't wait to get this album.

I am in love with this album. There is a variety of songs from pop to southern rock. I honestly love every song on this album. There are some real gems especially Valley of Angels, Hold On, Its My Life and Willing to Try. Bo has every reason to be proud. Buy it you won't be disappointed.

Great, great, even better than expected! It seeems a long time since the Idol final show and the dissapointment of a runner up position for Bo Bice but I will assure you that the wait has been worth your time. The Real Thing is astonishing and something that you can give as a Christmas gift to all ages on your Christmas list, from young to old. Buy it. it is good, clean, and honest talent at work

I was not sure what to expect with this cd since it would not have been easy to get radio to play Bo's originals (or a song like "Spinning Wheel") in the current music business today. I've listened to the cd about 10 times now and I'm now hooked on every song. It's not about the pop rockiness of the music, it's about enjoying Bo's voice. If you love Bo's voice and his charm and his warm heart and and his passion for music and all the things that matter in life, get this cd. Put on your headphones and relax and let his voice take you away. My favorite song so far is the sexy "You're Everything". Also good is his own soulful song "Valley of the Angels" and the uplifting hopeful "Hold on to Me." Anyone who things this cd is too pop rock for them will still enjoy at least a couple of these songs. Come on, it's BO! Bo is lovable. Get his cd. Show Bo how much you believe in him.

There are over 42 credits on Bo Bice's debut album but he did it himself. It was tempting to think that American Idol was housing a genuine southern rock rebel or at least a southern pop Eagles son, but anybody who truly believed that underestimated how much Simon Cowell knows his own show. Bice is a pop artist, as pop as Fantasia, as pop as 80's Elton, and no amount of cowboy hats and boot fit jeans is going to change that. Predictably, this is adult pop with a so called rugged sheen similar to the effect Mariah Carey was trying for when they grated tape hiss onto one of her records. It's not that it's a disappointment that's surprising. It's how anybody could have expected more that's the real shocker.

This CD is terrific! I especially love "Willing to try" and "Valley of Angels", the latter which was written by Bo. It's sure to win Bo many new fans (and if you want to see and hear the "real" Bo, pick up the dualdisc, which has some original Bo and SugarMoney tunes on it!! A must have for any fan!)

"The Real Thing" sounds as if bo is trying to stay loyal to american idol fans. If he would get past that and just bring back some good ol' fashion rock and roll, he could be amazing. Every song I hear sounds like it was written for middle aged women who adored him on american idol which very well may be the case. Hopefully in his next album, he can have the chance to really rock it out and show off his voice.

This album is great! Bo is a true rocker and his collaboration with Clive Davis, a winner. I only wish there were one or two songs that he had performed on American Idol. Now that this is out, I can't wait for Constantine's album to come out!

This cd isn't terrible, but it could be better. It's too much pop and not enough rock. The reason most people voted for Bo was because he was different and not pop. This cd is pop/rock with a leaning toward slow pop. Vocally he's not bad at all, though over-produced. I hope his next one is better.

The Jury is in on this one and it's not good news. Over-produced, lackluster songs, weak lyrics, the first ten songs almost all sound the same and sounds nothing like the Bo Bice we heard on American Idol. It's power pop and bad imitations of Kelly Clarkson, Bon Jovi, and the kitchen pop sink thrown in. Only on the last song do we get a glimpse of the Bice we knew and it's a good song. But not enough to recommend. Give this one a pass. If you must buy it, don't say you weren't warned.

It seems as though the writers of this album were in a rut, using the same background for many of the songs. There's a couple good ones to start and a couple good at the end, but the middle of the CD is kind of a snooze. Bo only actually got to write one of the songs that's on the album and that was Clive's biggest mistake. Bo's song "Valley of Angels" really shows his talent, and reminds me of the Bo that I grew to love on American Idol. I am looking forward to a second albumn in which Bo gets to write all the songs.

CD is okay. Amusing that the "reviews" posted on here are prior to even listening to the CD. Shouldn't the B&N rules include having listened to the music prior to writing a review on it?

The first time I listened to Bo's CD I must admit I was slightly disappointed. There were a few songs that I instantly loved, a couple that I really didn't care for and the rest I thought were OK. I think, like most people, that it just wasn't what I was expecting. The more I listened to it the more I came to like it, now I LOVE IT, even the couple of songs that I originally didn't care for, I like. If you have only listened to it once or twice, give it a few more spins before you judge it. You will begin to notice more and more of the growls, the wailing and the moans of the REAL Bo and he hits the really high notes to perfection. If you haven't bought his CD yet, (first of all, shame on you) you should buy the dual disc. The three bonus songs are excellent and they were written by Bo. He is an excellent songwriter and hopefully he will be able to display that on future releases. Although he did co-write two of the songs on the regular CD, and they are very, very good. If you're still sitting on the fence, or haven't bought it because of the negative reviews, give it a chance.

I purchased this a few weeks ago having no idea it would be so good. It ranks up there with the best... The collaboration on this CD makes it one of the best break out albums of all time. The songs will catch you and follow you throughout your day...

I bought this CD because I loved Bo's Southern Rock style on Idol. The CD is OK - too "pop" for my taste but I still love the texture of Bo's voice. Next time let Bo record his own songs with his own band!

I love Bo Bice, he's been a breath of fresh air. I love his personality, his voice, his funky/southern/soulful/rock sound. I was a bit dissapointed in the new album as it seems he was pushed too far into mainstream pop....BUT it's still great and like Kim from GA grows on you. My 5yo daughter loves it. Bo you are an awesome new talent that I'm sure will go right to the top..I hope your next album features some of that soulful passion you displayed on AI. Stay true to yourself.
Guest More than 1 year ago
I loved Bo on AI, but this albumn doesn't do him justice. There is so much backround music, it distorts HIS sound. Hope in his next albumn we hear the true Bo we all fell in love with!
