Jill Scott returns with the sass and edge that marked her breakthrough debut -- as the single "Hate On Me" makes clear. The Real Thing documents her recent divorce and artistic rebirth.
All Music Guide - Andy Kellman
The photos on the cover and within the booklet of The Real Thing: Words and Sounds, Vol. 3 do not match the music. Does Jill Scott really have to hail a cab? Is she really awakened in the middle of the night by the need to write songs with an anguished look on her face? Really? Because these songs sound like they were written as she was fed chocolate-dipped strawberries while sprawled out on a bed cloaked with rose petals. Well, ...

Is she really awakened in the middle of the night by the need to write songs with an anguished look on her face? Really? Because these songs sound like they were written as she was fed chocolate-dipped strawberries while sprawled out on a bed cloaked with rose petals. Well, that's not entirely true -- there are some exceptions, like the furious "Hate on Me," and a couple songs involving deep heartache and sharp admonishments. For the most part and considerably more so than Scott's first two studio albums, however, The Real Thing is for romancing couples. While some of the collaborators -- Andre Harris, Vidal Davis, Adam Blackstone -- are all over the singer's past releases, there's a handful of relatively new and significant associates, most notably JR Hutson. Presumably the son of '70s soul great Leroy Hutson, he is listed as "L. Hutson, Jr." in the songwriting credits. Hutson and Scott co-wrote four of the album's sweetest and steamiest songs, most of which have a few things in common with mid-'70s albums involving any combination of Minnie Riperton, Leon Ware, and Marvin Gaye. 4hero's "Les Fleurs" cover aside, "Come See Me" is the closest anyone has come to channeling Minnie, updating the slowest, most sensual sides of Perfect Angel and Adventures in Paradise. On the other hand, "Crown Royal" maintains that gooey, slightly sleazed-out sound of Marvin's I Want You while dispensing with the double entendres of that touchstone; Scott gets as erotic as ever, even raunchy at points, while making it all sound like poetry instead of straight smut. It's almost like she heard Janet Jackson's Damita Jo and figured, "Yeah, that's nice, but I can do it about ten times better."
Billboard - Gail Mitchell
Those jealous of her fame and career are summarily dismissed on the rock-edged "Hate on Me," while she channels old-school hip-hop on the revealing "Epiphany."

    ABSOLUTELY OUTSTANDING!!!

I, love this cd, I just bought Jill's new cd, 'The Light of the Sun', needless to say, I popped this cd in, I feel better now. Its lacking the lust, the before and after sex thirst of her old school music. This cd, Real Thing: Words and Sounds Vol. 3, is just good soothing!! love it!!

    So sweet and so sexy

Brilliance is the key to good music and Jill Scott knows what she is doing. Keep it flowing, sista! Track #5 reminds me of someone oh so special. It describes him oh so well, SKI.

    A reviewer

If you do not own a copy of this CD, get one quick. Amazing. Vibrant. Full of love, pain, sacrifice, and resilience. Jill Scott delivers in every way. Every song, every word, every melody weaves together forming amazing stories of love. Better than the first one. More alive than the second one. This one is truly Jill coming into her own!

    OH MY GOD!

This CD is the bomb...I was at my college homecoming this weekend and on our way out one night, one of my friends car had the CD playing, although I couldn't hear the soulfulness of the CD because of 5 chattie girls who haven't seen each other in a long time and were chatting loudly over the music, I still knew that this CD was going to be a hit. So, I opted not to go Saturday night, instead I headed straight to the store to pick up her CD. I must say that I was blown away by this album. Mind you , I am a Jill Scott fan, and I have bought all of her albums, but this one baby is the BOMB. I drove all the way home listening to the smooth lyrics and awesome beats. You go JILL SCOTT!
