For The Reason, those nice suburban Californians in Hoobastank refine and shade in the concentric circles of their self-titled debut, but stay safely within its platinum figure eight. "Crawling in the Dark" was the contoured heart of that album. Its combination of enormous rock chorus and elastic dreamboat vocals made Hoobastank stars and established their sound -- not original, but firmly rooted in the rousing voice of Doug Robb and guitarist Dan Estrin's slick post-grunge concoctions. Despite the usual pressure to produce another "Crawling," the songwriting duo seems to have largely been left alone for The Reason. Naturally, the presence of boffo big producer Howard Benson ensures the album's impeccable sonic accessibility. Robb's voice breaks at just the right time and for maximum emotional resonance, while the music ebbs and flows effortlessly between aggressive rockers and more introspective material. But for the most part, what you hear is what you get. Strings do pop up on a few songs, and here and there the harmonies seem too rich for reality. But these additional elements never overshadow the foursome's work. The strings punch up "Lucky"'s already uplifting chorus (the acoustic verses are a nice touch, too), while they're a lush bed of down pillows for the somewhat sappy title track. It's not that Robb's words throughout The Reason aren't genuine. Lyrics like "I'm not a perfect person, I never meant to do those things to you," "So what should I do, just lay next to you as though I'm unaffected?," and "There has to be somewhere that we can be safe from the lives we live each day" are delivered with real feeling. However, Hoobastank is still reducing teen angst (over love, escape, or a higher power) to digestible phrases, and writing sandpaper smooth rock symphonies around those couplets. So it's a formula, and one that remains unchanged from the debut. But Robb, Estrin, bassist Markku Lappalainen, and drummer Chris Hesse are a better band now -- endless touring will do that. "Same Direction" and "Just One" are standout anthems, raucous and righteous all at once. Lead single "Out of Control" lets Robb and Estrin shriek and shred with some reckless (yet still melodic and ready for radio) aggression. Meanwhile, the other, softer side of the band is represented best by "What Happened to Us?" and the drifting departure "Disappear," which both unfold as much more focused versions of Hoobastank's sometimes clunky attempts at nuance (think "To Be With You"). In the end, The Reason is really a better version of Hoobastank, written and played by more mature versions of Hoobastank.

this cd is a definite step up from their first cd. i enjoy both, but "the reason" is a maturing sound for hoobastank. the songs are intense both emotionally and lyrically. you can tell that doug robb has had heartbreak in the past, but is recovering by having millions relate to his songs. the chords and flow of the album is beyond amazing. they showed that they are not stopping nor slowing down anytime soon.

I think that this album is positivley great. It is so well rounded. It also seems to have a lot more emotion. They really wear their hearts on their sleeves on this CD.

This is a wonderful C.D. They have fresh new songs and you can really just chill out to them or play them anywhere to get the party started. The vocalist has a great voice and the rythm is awesome. You must get this C.D.

I grew up with Incubus, and so when I first heard Hoobastank I felt like they sort of ripped off a lot of Incubus' style. This CD, however, is a masterful work blending wonderful vocals and alternative harmonies with meaningful lyrics. This is an excellent CD to buy if you're one of those people who goes to Virgin Megatstores to look for a good CD but nothing in particular in mind.

This CD is a masterpiece of the rock genre. I only hope that this sophomore disc paves the way for even better releases by Hoobastank. My personal favorites are "What Happened to Us?", "Just One", and "Never There".

awsome cd! when i bought it 2 days ago i thought it wouldn't be as good as i thought it would. i totally guessed wrong! every song exept "lucky" & "disappear" rock. "just one, out of control & same direction" are the best! next time you go to the store buy it!

Between myself and the majority of my friends we found The Reason to be extremely good. It doesn't stray from their bands rock roots, but at the same time the songs are deeper and more heart felt. The first time I heard The Reason both me and friend were tearing up. We haven't stopped listening to the cd since we got it it goes everywhere with us. Softer than Hoobastank debut albumn, but still just as good. Check it out.

Hoobastank's new cd is just as good as the first! Every track is really great. You won't have to skip to find good songs. I know whenever I listen to it, it takes me to another world. I zone out and all I hear is Doug's sexy voice and amazing beats! If you are only buying one cd this year, buy this one! It's the best cd out there!!

I was blown away when I first heard the album. If you thought the last one was good, then you need to hear this one. The music and lyrics are way better and touch you in a way that you can relate to at least a couple of songs on it. I recommend that you get this, even if you've never been a big fan of Hoobastank. You will be after this...

When I bought the first cd I was hooked by the overall sound. This group is one to keep your eye on.The Reason is even better than the first. A much mature effort by the band they are really solid on this release.

Hoobastank has outdone their first album--if that was even possible. Their lyrics, guitar and drum melodies and vocals are amazing and precisely on key. They do not miss a beat and keep the listener entertained and transfixed for ours. It’s difficult to find an album in which you say you “love” every song, however I can say, without a doubt, that is the case with this album. I am greatly anticipating their next. I recently saw Hoobastank in concert at the McDonald Theater in Eugene, Oregon and I must say that they are amazing to see in person. They crow went wild, the band was amazing and overall it was the best concert I have ever been to. They worked the crowd well and I loved that they sang “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” for the ladies—very appealing.

This is just such and awesome album. Their are very few cd's where I can say I love every single song. Buying this cd will be the best thing you ever do, you definately will not regret it. The emotion on this album is just unbelievable, you feel everything their playing. You have got to buy this album if you haven't already!

The sophomore hoobastank album is incredible. Too many artist try too update their image but when your original image is good why change? Hoobastank has done a great job of sticking to what they know. They have made a great rock album that any kind of rock fan can enjoy, good job guys!
