Overview

The Reason of Fools by Dodie Cantrell-Bickley

Regeneration Writers Press, December 2012 (www.regenerationpress.com)

Based on a true story, The Reason of Fools weaves the parallel and mesmerizing tales of a young man and woman on opposite sides of the Atlantic, each embroiled in a fight against enemies from within and without their respective countries.

Lilo, the willful daughter of a damaged German World War I veteran joins her father in his second war-against Hitler. Bud, the stubborn son of a devout southern preacher, battles the Nazis as one of a handful of white officers leading an all black tank battalion. As his men give their lives for the "Double V"-victory over the Germans in Europe and victory over racism at home, Bud struggles to keep the faith of his father.

Against the backdrop of one of the world's deadliest conflicts, Dodie Cantrell Bickley takes readers on a moving journey through some of the greatest horrors of the last century to discover the potential for love, hope, and healing that exists in each of us.

About the Author

Dodie Cantrell-Bickley is a self-proclaimed Army brat. Among the various stops at Army posts throughout her childhood was the transfer of her family to France. There, her German mother opted to send Cantrell and her two brothers to the French public school rather than the American school on the Army post. She is conversant in both German and French.

A more profound result of growing up as the daughter of an American soldier and a mother who spent her youth under the oppressive rule of the Nazis, Cantrell became a passionate First Amendment advocate. She spent more than three decades in broadcasting, working as a reporter, news anchor, news producer and television station president and general manager and garnering numerous awards for her consumer and investigative reporting.

After the fall of Communism in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, Cantrell-Bickley volunteered to travel to Bulgaria and Macedonia to work with journalists learning how to function in their new environment. She also sponsored and worked with journalists and media managers from Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Romania, Serbia, Sri Lanka, Uganda, and Ukraine.

Cantrell-Bickley retired from broadcasting in 2012 to complete a manuscript begun some twenty-five years ago-a developing version of The Reason of Fools, her first novel. Married to Randy Bickley, Cantrell is a graduate of Mercer University and Georgia College and State University.

What People are Saying About This

Bent Creek Book Club - Kelly Deushane

A successful combination of two narratives, each a full-bodied historically accurate tale. . . . the perfect selection for book club discussion.

I enjoyed The Reason of Fools on several levels . . . it encompasses an era that gave me some familiarity with the times and places of many of the chapters. I was a combat fighter pilot, flying P-51 Mustangs with the 99th Fighter Squadron, 332nd Fighter Group, known as the Red Tails and as the Tuskegee Airmen. . . . I enjoyed the book immensely. ——Thurston L. Gaines, Jr., M.D., FACS, Tuskegee Airman

Former Senior Legal Counsel, Gannett Co., Inc. - David Fleming

The Reason of Fools is terrific! The drama that built as the two characters slowly made their way to a meeting was gripping . . . a remarkable story.

Author, International Banker, Refugee from Nazi Germany - Pierre Ferrand

This book presents characters who are alive. It is suffused with emotion. The capacity for presenting human beings who sound so real is not so frequent.

Former President & Managing Director, NBC Europe; Former President & CEO, Gannett Broadcasting - Roger Ogden

A must read for those who love history, romance, and an unlikely outcome all based upon a real story.

Author, Professor Emeritus of Philosophy and Religion - Duane Davis

This is one of the best things I've ever read. Dodie is incredibly talented and thoughtful and real.
