Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Just the mention of civil strife, freedom of the press, the gold rushes and even civilians protecting their land, makes America come to mind. In The Rebels, that fact is still true, although the book is about the northern part of North America, Canada. Yes, the Canadians have fought the same battles for the same liberties as United States citizens. They have lost great politicians to assassinations. They packed up their families and headed north in the hopes of striking it rich with gold. Canadians have fought off rebels attempting to overthrow their government and take their land. Yet, like Americans, they have prospered through it all and made a life for themselves. What a wonderful book to read to learn about the Canadian struggles and triumphs. At the end of each chapter there is a hands-on project for the reader to help reinforce learning. This book is part of the "Discovering Canada" series. 2000, Stoddart Publishing, $9.95. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Scott S. Floyd
