Overview

The relics are a collection of things in a wooden box unside of what was made to look like an ossuary, a stone box that was made to hold someones bones. How did they get there? Hoow did they stay undisturbed for two and a half thousand years while the box was moved thousands of miles. What were these theings and why was so much trouble taken to preserve them? How did a wooden box containing a strange assortment of relics end up inside a carved stone box that was supposed to hold a collection of bones? What’s more how did it stay there for two and a half thousand years while the stone box was moved many times and over thousands of miles? And what was this stuff anyway?
In the basement of a Berlin museum a boy watches his father, an archeologist, open what appears to be an ossuary. Its contents are not bones but relics that are, to say the least, startling. In view of world events, it is the first week of September, 1939, it is decided to reseal the ossuary and move it to what is hoped will be a safe place. The archeologist is going to try to take his wife, three children, and their nurse to the United States. With some surprises and changes in plans because the Gestapo learned what he was doing, he succeeds. He goes to work for the US Government. Will the museum and the ossuary survive the war?
We follow the family through WW II. A romance develops between the family’s nurse and a rather mysterious State Department “chauffeur”. The boy grows up, eventually earns a Doctorate. The ossuary and its contents are never far from his thoughts. In Germany a museum worker who had seen the ossuary opened and reclosed, tries to keep track of it during the war. A “head-knocking” incident between the boy and a young lady leads to meeting, romance and marriage to a budding lawyer. In a series of flash backs we learn about the relics and how they came to be in the ossuary.
After the war, with his new wife, the young man returns to visit the museum which is now in the Russian controlled zone of Berlin. Getting access to the ossuary seems impossible. With the tacit cooperation of US Army intelligence, help from interested people in the US, a man who had been a janitor in the museum and a bit of subterfuge he succeeds. After working through some tense situations, he gets the ossuary and some other things out of East Berlin and on their way to the US. There they can be examined and possibly some questions answered.

Meet the Author

I am a teacher.I used to race cars and motorcycles. I taught history, political science, economics and general Social Sciences, I'm married, we have three Kids. I did a hitch in the USAF, then finished college and a masters degree. A wise man once told me a good history teacher had to be a good story-teller or the history would dry up and blow away. I enjoy research and writing. Most of my writing comes from that source whether fiction or non fiction.
