Although this book is part of a series, it can also stand alone.

Thomas Seabrook, the penniless Duke of Wentworth, walks into White’s for a night cap.   He leaves no longer in need of coin. In fact, he has become a wealthy man and owner of Hamilton Whaling Industries of New Bedford, Massachusetts and guardian of a seventeen-year-old girl.

Overview

Although this book is part of a series, it can also stand alone.

Thomas Seabrook, the penniless Duke of Wentworth, walks into White’s for a night cap.   He leaves no longer in need of coin. In fact, he has become a wealthy man and owner of Hamilton Whaling Industries of New Bedford, Massachusetts and guardian of a seventeen-year-old girl. Thomas travels to Boston intent on bringing his ward back and marrying her off to the first eligible gentleman who requests her hand. Except the first gentleman to ask for her, is his own brother, Sebastian. Thomas refuses, because bloody hell, he wants her for himself.

Emma Hamilton is not happy with her new situation. Her papa brought her up to be independent and assertive. How dare this stranger, this moody noble, dictate what she can do and not do? When she finds herself thrown into a London Season, being introduced from one gentleman to another, looking for a husband, she realizes only the duke will do. How can she break through the duke’s hard exterior and find the loving, caring gentleman she knows he hides from everyone.

Its a nice read with good editing.BUT this author has a habit of writing long drawn passages (of filler material) explaining a single thought or lovers angst. One cant say its slow moving because she has a year in America pass by in a page or so. It is also obvious that the groundwork of her next books is being laid in the form of other ancillary characters and their story. All in all; its a fair (skimmed) free read. I don't know if I want to pay to skimp through her other works.

Simple plot , strained writing, clumsy ending--at least it was free

I tried to read this book. I kept thinking it would get better but it never did. The conflict in the story is only repeated over and over to the point of nauseum. The characters were never developed. I wasted too much time hoping it would improve.

This is definitely a book to skim. The first half of the book gets boring due to repetition. The second half gets more interesting but still isn't that good. Ok for a free book. I would not buy a book from this author.

The male lead was smart and the female lead was mostly too weak although the author would then claim that she was strong. She too often allowed his mother to handle things she should have been handling.

The Reluctant Duke is my first read by Christine Donovan. This book is well written. The characters are lovable and Thomas and Emma's story is full of drama and sizzle. I enjoyed The Reluctant Duke and look forward to reading more from Christine Donovan in the future. The Reluctant Duke is book 1 of A Seabrook Family Saga series. It can be read as a stand alone. This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

Maybe OK for young adult but not for me. Story is slow, language stilted. Can't finish this one
