The Remixes

All Music Guide - William Ruhlmann
Columbia Records cannot be accused of stinting on the two-CD Remixes set, which has a running time over two hours and 20 minutes. Mariah Carey's former label, before she moved to Virgin and then Island Def Jam where she recorded under her own MonarC imprint, has made a point of licensing extra tracks from those subsequent corporate associations, as well as borrowing a track from J Records in compiling a survey of the various remixes of Carey's recordings. This means that the collection stretches as far back as 1991 for the "12' Club Mix" of "Emotions" and all the way up to 2003 for the "So So Def Remix" of "The One." The result is a kind of history of remixes over that...

This means that the collection stretches as far back as 1991 for the "12' Club Mix" of "Emotions" and all the way up to 2003 for the "So So Def Remix" of "The One." The result is a kind of history of remixes over that 12-year period. Of course, the term "remix" is, as usual, an excessively modest one to describe what has been done to the original recordings. A variety of remix producers have not only manipulated the original tracks, but also added various elements of their own to the point that, in many cases, the songs as initially heard are virtually unrecognizable. Every now and then, one hears a snatch of lyric or a familiar musical excerpt, but for the most part these are dance-oriented musical productions with only a nodding resemblance to Carey's records. Of course, Carey herself is always in the thick of the reinvention. The first disc contains more danceable material, while the second is given over to tracks reconstructed from a rap perspective and is filled with guest appearances that include Snoop Dogg, O.D.B., Da Brat, Missy Elliott, and, in the album-closing duet, "I Know What You Want," Busta Rhymes, who is actually billed in front of Carey. A large part of Carey's massive success of the 1990s came from her relationship to the dancefloor, and this compilation shows what her music sounded like there.

    Remixes

I Was a littlebit dissapointed with this album because Mariah picks songs from her Butterfly and Rainbow albums without mixing them the songs are Breakdown,Honey from Butterfly and Crybaby and Heartbreaker feat Missy Elliot,Da-brat from Rainbow fantasy from Mariah´sno1# feat ODB and Sweetheart from the same album it should have been mixed more but this album is pretty good with the new rn ,b Hit with Busta Rhymes I Know What You Wan´t and I Miss You with Jadakiss. All In all a nice and well done album but could be much better.

    Often Imitated But Never Duplicated!

The "often imitated but never duplicated" Mariah Carey collects her best remixes into this 2-disc set. As the Best-Selling Artist of the 90's, many people fail to credit the artist behind the oft-criticized image. Mariah Carey writes and produces her own material and she shows she has her finger on the pulse of the pop culture landscape with the innovative remixes she's produced over the years. Starting with Fantasy, she pioneered the current wave of rap/sung collaborations by adding O.D.B. to the remix. The popularity of this song on the Billboard Hot 100 brought the hip-hop sound to mainstream audiences. Indeed, the Fantasy remix opened the door to the current sound of rap/sung music that is dominant in radio today. When she took the base melody of Always Be My Baby and remixed it with Da Brat and Xscape, she gave the song a whole new R&B edge. Mariah's innovative remixes has paved the way for many of today's artists including Jennifer Lopez. This double-CD set collects hard to find remixes previously available only on singles. Standout tracks include: Heartbreaker remix, Emotions club mix, and Fantasy featuring O.D.B.

One of the best if not the best remix albums ever!!!

Its just a great album to listen to, it just makes you want to get up and dance, and I love it when Mariah actually goes back to the studio and re-sings most of the vocals, not like other remix albums out there. I LOVE YOU MARIAH!!!!!!
