Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Dana A Simonson, BA (Regions Hospital)
Description: This book from the At a Glance series focuses on all aspects of the structure, function, and diseases of the respiratory system.
Purpose: It is a practical book that integrates core aspects of basic science, pathophysiology, and treatment into a single, easy to use text without the expense and size of an encyclopedic tome. Clinical examples and cases teach the underlying science of the respiratory system.
Audience: Medical students throughout their training, nurses, and allied health professionals would benefit from this work. The authors include scientists and medical doctors from the U.K. and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
Features: Forty-one chapters and an index are included in 100 pages of text. A one-page table of contents expedites location of specific topics. The book begins with a reference section describing units, symbols, and abbreviations used throughout. An overview of each topic is presented in a comprehensive, two-page chapter spread complete with black-and-white figures. Discussion originates with respiratory system structure and physiological function. Especially well-written are the chapters on lung mechanics. Specific diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pneumonia, and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) are dealt with individually in later chapters. Four case studies with answers can be found at the end of the book and reinforce the popular, systematic approach to medical curriculum education. The American student or practitioner may find minor difficulty using these case studies with respect to SI units of measurement. Throughout the rest of the book, however, both measurement systems are used. Chapters are well written and packed with details. There are no references.
Assessment: This book can be recommended as a useful instructional and reference tool for students and health professionals. Some examination candidates may find it useful for review. Although designed for revision, this book covers all the basic elements of the respiratory system and its major diseases.
