Overview

The heart-pounding conclusion to the DOGS OF THE DROWNED CITY trilogy brings the dogs home -- but can they go back to being pets? Shep and his pack have survived a terrible storm and fought off a pack of vicious wild dogs. Now the dog pack must face their greatest challenge yet: finding their way back to their families. Now that the humans have returned to the city, Shep knows he wants to find his boy. But there are so many other dogs to help, and so many dangers along the way. Worst of all is Shep's fear -- now that he's learned to live Outside, will he be able to find happiness again as a pet? "Curl up with your kibble and savor this incredible story of dogs left behind when a hurricane sweeps through their city. This page-turner follows stalwart Shep and intrepid Callie, who despite her ‘yapper’ size is up to her muzzle in courage, as this extraordinary canine duo braves their new environment and forms a new pack. Dayna Lorentz has delivered a book with bite--and with a great heart." Kathryn Lasky, author of The Guardians of Ga’Hoole and Wolves of the Beyond

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Greta Holt
Shep, the alpha dog in a survival pack of pets that has been roaming the area after a great storm, is exhausted. But when pack members, who have been through the storm, starvation, and wild dog attacks, want to find their families, Shep resists. How can they give up this freedom for a leash and confinement? Sure, they love their human families, and it would be inexpressibly wonderful to have consistent feedings again, but do they really want to go back to eating dry kibble, when they have been eating fresh kills? Shep would rather free his friend Callie from the dog catchers than try to find home. The rescued Callie advises Shep that, "Life isn't about freedom; it's about choosing what you want to be free from." Much has happened on the road, and when the betrayer Zeus, a bulldog who earlier led the pets into a wild dog attack, comes back wanting to join them, Shep must be particularly careful. Pumpkin, a poodle/shih tzu, knows where the humans might be. The pack sets out to find them. Fuzz, the wise and faithful cat, scouts ahead. Along the way they encounter broken bridges and swollen water, more wild dogs, and dog catchers. Shep takes care of the injured Zeus, because he reasons that that is what alphas should do. At the end of their journey, the remaining dogs: Oscar, the optimistic pup, Daisy, Ginny, Boji, Rufus, and the rest do find their human families. Shep does reconnect with his young owner. The Great Wolf has seen them through, and Shep is amazed at how much he has missed his family. Lorentz does not overreach for adventure in this final book of the series. She ties up the loose ends, philosophizes a bit, and brings the adventure to a realistic conclusion. Readers who have read the first two books will be comfortable with the dialogue tags, such as "woofed" and "growled," and the anthropomorphism inherent in this type of story. Book three in the "Dogs of the Drowned City" series. Reviewer: Greta Holt

DON'T READ THIS BOOK. I REPEAT DO NOT READ THIS BOOK. If you are someone who has read the other two books and wants to read the third one, don't read it because it has a terrible ending and it will ruin the whole series. I understand that the last book left you hanging so I have decided to make a fake ending for those of you who want to know what happens. Here it is:   Shep and the remains of the pack go to this place with tones of cages full of all sorts of pets. They are able to rescue Callie, Blaze, and a Cocker spaniel(Named Ozzie) that Dover insists on rescuing, but they don't have time to help anyone else. Shep and his pack then journey away from the city into the countryside. They soon find a barn near a farm, that they want to use as shelter. A cat named Bear lives in the barn. She tells Fuzz, and Fuzz tells the pack, that the humans no longer use the barn. Fuzz convinces Bear to let the dogs stay at the barn, and she agrees. The barn turns out to be the perfect base tor the dogs, Lots of space, no vicious dogs, lots of prey to hunt. Since the pack is smaller Callie and Shep aren't under so much pressure. The dogs are truly happy in their new home. Fuzz becomes good friends with Bear, and is happy to be around another cat. Callie and Ozzie become good friends, and Blaze and Shep are together as always.     I hope you enjoyed my ending and I hope you like it enough to not read the real book. :-)
