Overview

Her heart pounding with fear and longing, Charlotte Langston set sail from India for England, the homeland she had not seen for so many years…desperate to find the man whose love had once made her life a paradise…How well she remembered the day they met, when, pistol drawn, she’d charged into the private garden of Delhi’s commander-in-chief and challenged the soldiers who were trespassing there. Captain Edward Langston had been handsome, strong, and, despite his part in the day’s mischief, possessed of a confidence that was instantly compelling. Only sixteen, Charlotte had been innocent enough to ignore her maidservant’s dark foreboding, headstrong enough to defy her old-fashioned father and marry a man he considered an ambitious, arrogant upstart. Honeymooning in the shadow of the Taj Mahal, Charlotte had glowed with incandescent love. But barely two months later, her happiness had been shattered by a bloody native uprising that left her widowed and in despair.

Now, ten years later, Charlotte was leaving the heat and dust of India to embark upon a new, uncertain future…to find the beloved husband who, she had just discovered, was miraculously still alive…

Meet the Author

Writing is a career that found me when I had actually given up looking for it. In the middle of a doctoral program in Clinical Psychology 15 years ago, and quite by accident, I came upon the true, breathtaking story, which spanned over two decades and began when the legendary Diane de Poitiers was 31 and her lifelong love was the scandalously young second son of the King of France. That story, which unfolded for me on several research trips to France--- and which became my first published novel Courtesan, really changed the course of my life. I grew absolutely driven to accurately tell to an American audience the true story of Diane de Poitiers' strength, love and commitment to a man she loved but could never marry.

Being willing to adapt my writing to changing times has also been integral for me to staying published, and it is the thing about which new writers seem to ask me most. My best advice is to stay true to yourself and your goals, but be willing, if necessary, as it was for me, to "pay your dues" to get where you want to be. Every book, no matter how different, is a learning experience and a chance for you to grow as a writer.

    Stunning, Beautiful, Timeless...

Set in Victorian times, this charming, and heartwarming tale about two lovers bound by Fate (Captain Edward Langston, and Charlotte Lawrence). Charlotte has spent ten years in India, moving there when she was six with her mother and father, Mr. Lawrence, whom was sent to aid Queen Victoria in Her war in India. When Charlotte turns sixteen, on a fateful day in the Orange Orchards behind her fathers house, she meets the handsome Captain Langston. They immediately felt the spark and attraction between them. All consuming love, war, action, tragedy, death, and near death experiences. A father opposed to his daughters love, a spirited young woman determined to stop at nothing for her hearts desire, a man of honor, caught up in a cruel twist of Fate, this book has you on the edge of your seat. You literally feel the hurt, the betrayal, the cruelties of life, of love. You can feel the passion, and the romance. I will continue to enjoy this book for years to come, and suggest that every lover of romance and historical romance to read this novel (and the other books by Diane Haeger. She is an amazing author who stays true to the time periods of her books, and is historically correct, while managing to put her own twist on her books), Diane, you have captivated me again! This book was worth every penny, please purchase, you will NOT regret it.

Good story but for all the typos

This was a wonderful story. I would have enjoyed it far more if she could have paid for an editor. There were so many typos that many times I didn't know what was being said! I don't remember what i paid for this book but it should be in the bargain range.
