Overview

Weeping madonnas, the mark of the Beast, Jesus on the face of a tortilla—reporter Michael Mason has seen it all, from the patently false to the genuinely inexplicable. His search for glimpses of God ahs uncovered dozens of fraudulent claims, including twenty-seven false messiahs. Still, something drives him on—maybe the bizarre recurring dreams, maybe his own past. He has to know.

The black Brazilian woman follows the messianic template: the hype, the healings, the adulation. Her control and dominance over the mammoth crowd at a São Paulo service surprises Mason. Is it the usual self-delusion? Hypnotism on a mass scale?

Mason follows the entourage to Miami, to services that fill the Orange Bowl. World attention intensifies; thousands flock to be cured, to revel in the magical voice. Healings of several seriously ill children soften even Mason's skepticism. Is she the One?

A disciple's odd death hints at something more sinister. Mason finds himself torn between reporting the story and becoming part of it himself, realizing "Zhézush" and the others may be using him to further their cause. Evidence of deception adds further unease, leading him to question whether his glimpse is instead that of the Other.

Drawn into a vortex of darkness and doubt, he returns to an unfamiliar country. His quest for the truth takes him from a mental institution to the shantytown favelas to a Brazilian prison. Pursued by the government, the military, and the shadowy ajudantes, he must examine his own secrets and beliefs, and escape with the answer, his sanity, and his life.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
The question "How will we know Jesus when he returns?" is the basis for Mustian's creative debut novel. Reporter Michael Mason has made a career out of debunking fraudulent messiahs and faith healers, but he's not sure what to make of Zhezush da Bahia, the "Jesus of Bahia." She certainly has stirred up a worldwide audience with her trip to the United States from Brazil. Yes, "she." Zhezush is female, fat, and black, a combination that threatens conservative religious groups with heart failure. Even skeptical Mason is starting to believe; after all, Jesus never said exactly when or in what form he would return, and Zhezush has a certain presence that inspires "Love, Peace, Justice." Mason's investigation places him in grave danger when Elizabeth Obrando, Zhezush's right-hand woman, decides he's getting too close to the truth. Fans of the Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins's "Left Behind" series, with its apocalyptic view, will devour this. Hopefully, with its abrupt cliffhanger, Book 2 is close behind. Journalist MIke Mason's pursuit of the truth behind an amazing Brazilian cult leads him to mortal danger, international conspiracy and the final war between Christ and the Devil in Mark Musian's dark, ambitious suspense novle The Return. First time writer Mustian uses fast paced dialogue and plentiful bibilical citaitons to paint his energetic hero; the mysterious, messianic woman called Zh&#233zush; and the environs through which they rush, from S&#227o Paulo to South Florida.
