Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
As a child, Doug Peterson climbed down a well near his family's vacation house and found a mythical land called Valdonia. The magical creatures of this world, who were engaged in a war with a dark queen, named Doug their king, and it was prophesied that he would lead them to victory. But Doug returned to his parents and the city, forgetting all about his mission. Years later, Doug, now a slacker 33-year-old with a son named Oscar, heads to the vacation house and end up taking on the adventure he left behind as a boy. The story is told with a light touch and plenty of gags, with modern conveniences like cellphones employed as weapons, and Doug's laid-back attitude getting them both into trouble. Clark's drawings are action-packed and full of movement, and he does a great job showing the pair's progression toward maturity through expressions and gesture. The lesson is, after all, about growing up, and both Doug and Oscar return to their world with a new attitude about commitment. That said, the moral of the story is never heavy-handed, and this fun read can be embraced by younger readers as well. Ages 13–up. (Nov.)
VOYA
Eight-year-old Doug Peterson stumbled into an amazing fantasy world filled with centaurs and other incredible creatures. In this world, Doug was deemed the "chosen one" because the Heart of Agnon glowed when it was put around his neck. Doug was to lead the Kingdom of Valdonia into war against the Dark Queen, but instead, he got scared—and returned to his parents' summer house in the Poconos. Since that fateful day, Doug has been running from everything—responsibility, a stable job, family life—and now, twenty-five years later, he is little more than a loser. Doug decides to bring his son, Oscar, to the summer house where he spent so much of his youth, but the memories of Valdonia seem like a dream. Until, of course, Oscar discovers the well that is the portal to that magical kingdom, and Doug must follow to rescue him. Present-day Valdonia is not the same as the kingdom he abandoned, but Doug runs into some familiar faces, including an adoring tumtum named Feldspar, who helps him with his search. Along the way, Doug learns a thing or two about following through, and he grows up significantly as he realizes how much his son means to him. This novel is a fun adventure that teens will enjoy start to finish. There is quite a bit of humor—some blatant, some tongue-in-cheek—and both Doug and the inhabitants of Valdonia (past and present) are interesting for their flaws and foibles. Give this one to fans of the Groo series by Sergio Aragones—it's sure to be a hit. Reviewer: Kimberly Paone
School Library Journal
Gr 9 Up–A secret door into another world, the battle of good vs. evil, redemption–these elements are so common in fantasy that they have long been clichés. The Return of King Doug takes the lot of these epic journey tropes and gives them a tweak by injecting sarcasm and humor. On vacation with his family, eight-year-old Doug discovers the fantastical Kingdom of Valdonia hidden down a well. Hailed as the chosen one who will lead a victory over the Dark Witch, he is not quite ready to accept his role and leaves the inhabitants of Valdonia high and dry. Flash forward 25 years. Doug is a divorced, directionless, video-game-playing father. When his son is dropped off for a weekend, Doug takes the youngster to his family’s old vacation house. There Oscar is pulled into Valdonia, and Doug goes in after him, discovering a kingdom much different than the one he left. He finds his son and his courage, defeating the Dark Witch. The authors never leave an opportunity for humor unexploited. The tone is certainly sarcastic, often with wisecracks that provide solid (if a bit immature) laughs. The black-and-white illustrations are crisp and clear, smoothly conveying the story with an animation quality that is easy to follow. It’s all entertaining enough, with an irreverence that will please many graphic-novel fans, but an additional purchase overall.-–Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI

The return of King Doug was interesting story. It was funny because of all the inappropriate humor the book had that I enjoyed. I think the author¿s purpose for writing this book was to show share with the reader a fantasy story to like take the reader and just bring them into her book to show you what she has in mind. I think the main theme was regret like in the story Doug was depended on by everyone one in the kingdom but he just left and broke his promise and never came back and then 20 years later or so Doug finds himself in his childhood fantasy looking for his son Oscar who¿s been captured and he¿s on his own because everyone has turned against him for what he has done. I think the author is trying to show the reader is you can¿t run away from your problems because no matter how hard you try they will always come back just like with Doug breaking his promise and he doesn¿t just go back and finish his problem he ignores it for 20 years. I would recommend this book for readers because of its humor and just the story itself is good also if you like fantasy creatures you should read it. The end was a little confusing but if you want to know what I¿m talking about your going to have to read it but this book was also an adventure book because of all the fighting and situations the character gets into. Thank you for reading this and hope you like the story.
