This engrossing book by Roby (Love, Honor and Betray) follows the trajectory of nearly a dozen others in the Reverend Curtis Black series. Charlotte, the wife of the famous pastor-author Rev. Curtis Black, has betrayed him and he wants a divorce. He’s no innocent victim, as Roby’s bestselling tales have shown, but in her 17th book, she adds more drama and intrigue to the infidelities of both husband and wife, which have catastrophic consequences for their children and their church family at Deliverance Outreach. The writing is cinematic and the juicy plot moves quickly, but some awkward phrases and distracting dialogue dull the narrative. Roby has a talent for underscoring the universal challenges of people of faith, and more often than not, that strength carries the story. (May)
Kirkus Reviews
Another episode in the soap opera otherwise known as the life of Reverend Curtis Black. Chicago mega-church pastor and celebrity author Reverend Black has another self-engineered debacle on his hands. Although in the last installment he and wife Charlotte had cheated on each other, Curtis is unable to forgive her. Charlotte, who has atoned in myriad ways, including transforming her resentment of Curtis' love child Curtina into profound motherly love, goes into a tailspin when Curtis moves into a guest bedroom and coldly informs her that he will file for divorce the minute their son Matthew has graduated from high school and is safely Harvard-bound. At her favorite suburban sports bar, she has a few too many and returns home schnockered. She pours out her frustrations to Curtis, who only grows more indifferent the more she drinks. Increasingly, he's been finding solace in daily telephone conversations with Sharon, a new church member who moved (she says) to Chicago to be near him and offers him (he thinks) platonic friendship. When Charlotte's behavior grows more erratic (she embarrasses the straight-laced Matthew by impugning his girlfriend's virtue as the youngsters are posing for prom photos, and then stays out late at the sports bar where she's seen chatting up another man), Curtis visits Sharon and almost sleeps with her before his religious scruples kick in. Charlotte confronts Curtis with cell phone evidence of his flirtation, and the tide turns. Curtis actually warms to her, and reconciliation is in the air. He's happy Charlotte decided to surprise him at an event he's keynoting in Detroit, but when the couple discovers Sharon, scantily clad and lolling on Curtis' hotel bed, it's back to square one. As a pastor, Curtis is a woeful role model--he behaves ethically only when it suits him and is quicker to blame others than to accept the consequences of his own misdeeds. Despite his sanctimonious protestations, Curtis hasn't learned his lesson, and future fracases, necessitating future books, are inevitable.

I was really looking forward to reading this book, but by the 3r

I was really looking forward to reading this book, but by the 3rd chapter, it felt like I was reading the same lines over and over. Not until 3/4 of the book did anything happen and that wasn't very exciting. I usually carry her books everywhere I go, but I left this one at the office and read only at lunch. Could not wait to finish this book. Very disappointing!

    Not what I had expected

This book was really, really hard to finish. The story line was very slow paced, not nearly as exciting or compelling as the previous books in the series. I would like to see a spin off from this series, such as a book on Matthew or another book on Alicia. Maybe even introduce a new character into the mix. Perhaps the Rev. Black storyline just needs a break for a while...

    Not Worth The Read

This book is the same as always. Pastor Black and Charlotte continues to have martial problems. Infidelity, either on her part or his part. Charlotte continues to be a liar, schemer, cheat, and manipulative. It is time to bring this seris to an end. It is starting to look like the next book will be the 1st wife's (Tanya) husband dying, and Pastor Black go back that way. If this is the going on behind in a Pastor's life, who would ever want to go to church. If she is not going to end the series, please add something new and fresh, or better yet, let these two people go their separate ways, and truly find their soulmate. I was very disappointed with this book. It was a waste of my money

    Forgive and Forget?

Roby’s most recent novel, “The Reverend’s Wife” picks up where “Love, Honor and Betray” left off: the imminent divorce of Reverend Curtis Black from his third wife Charlotte. Although both have made mistakes in their marriage, including committing adultery, Curtis refuses to forgive his wife for her betrayals. Rev. Black is biding his time... waiting for his son Matthew to graduate from high school so he can serve his wife with divorce papers. Charlotte still desperately wants her marriage. However, she falls onto a destructive path that may drive Curtis away even sooner than he planned. Ultimately, the Blacks must learn a hard lesson about true forgiveness, redemption and the power of love.

This latest offering in the Reverend Curtis Black series is a decent story. There is a tad bit of drama and a few surprises to keep the reader turning the pages. However, I found the story to be quite lackluster and not as engaging as the others in the series. Also, the ending does not leave unanswered questions which makes me wonder if Roby has penned the final novel in the series.

    Couldn't put this down!!!!

In the past, I would never spend my past times just reading a book...not until I stumbled along Kimberla Lawson on my Nook. This book was definitely ADDICTING! I couldnt put this one down! The characters are VERY REALISTIC, and at times i could see myself in them. The Rev. Curtis series is amazing, i have read 3 books in less than 2 weeks!! I love her style of writing and I will definitely purchase more books from her!

    Tedious drivel

This is the first of the Reverend Black series that I've read since it was a book club selection and I'm a new member. I should say that I tried to read it......paqes and pages of "please take me back" and "no I can't because you cheated on me and I can't trust you." Never mind the fact that he cheated on her, but she did it first!, and he cheated on one of his previous wives, and is trying to hook up with her again but she's now happily married again, and he's already looking for Mrs. Black #4 - he just can't figure out who it will be yet.I found these characters to be SO shallow and unlikeable, If there was a real plot in there somewhere I couldn't keep plowing through to find it.

I started reading the sample (first 4 and a half chapters) and I thoroughly enjoyed what I read. I will HAVE to buy his book to find out what Curtis Black or Charlotte will do in this book. Kimberla Lawson Roby and Curtis Black always offer a good book to read.

    Another great book!

Once again Mrs. Lawson Roby did not disappoint with her latest release in the Rev. Black series. I'm only upset that I finished it so quickly. I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens with Matt and Raquel in the next book! I loved it. Five stars!

I love reading the Rev. Black series. Glad to read that Curtis didn't give into tempatition. Rev. Black always attracts crazy women. I hope this is not the end of this series, cause I would for Matt to have a story.

    Curtis Black Series

I love Kimberla's book, but I have to say that I was very disappointed with this book!!! I did not like the ending & it was similiar to another Curtis Black book. The last book I read was disappointing too & I'm a little nervous to purchade her next book (I've read all her books) I wish you the best amd I'm not trying to be mean, but you really need to step it up just a little or you might just lose some readers ;(
