Overview

Zoey Kane is known around Riverside for making bad decisions when it comes to auctions and real estate investments. When her savvy daughter, Claire, learns her most recent purchase is eighty acres on the haunted, desolate side of town, she is simply flabbergasted. Amazement takes over the entire community and beyond, however, when a one-hundred-year-old mansion is discovered deep within trees.

When the Kanes transform Hillgate Manor into a popular hotel, things don’t go according to plan. On top of all the strange noises after midnight, room number 10 becomes notorious for scary happenings, and Gothics replace the swank out-of-towners who head for the hills. Someone or something doesn’t want it to be a success. Messages on a mirror demanding, “Find more clues, find more clues!” convince the mother and daughter they must solve a string of riddles—that reveal haunting secrets, skeletons and murder—before it’s too late.

    What a FUN, INTRIGUING book!

    A little humor
    A little mystery
    A little suspense
    A little romance
    A little treasure-hunting
    A wonderful read!

Zoey has made her craziest purchase to date...eighty acres of who knows what.
Claire has just lost her job and her boyfriend and has come home to be with her mom.
Together the two start walking through the eighty acres.

They come across a family cemetery, an old mansion and a lot of weeds.
The mansion is filled with all the heirlooms left behind by the previous family.
Why would they leave everything behind? And what happened to the family? And why is there an old newspaper detailing the Riverside fire of 1927 in an old locked trunk?

After months of work they finally have the mansion ready for guests.
But when the guests start complaining that the mansion is haunted Zoey and Claire have their work cut out for them...
Can they uncover "the riddles of Hillgate" manor?

    Just ok

This book was ok. There were some grammatical errors. Short, easy, read.

This is a poorly written book. Too much story was condensed into too little book. The main plot could have made a fun story, but the writer never fully developed any of the characters and the plot tended to wander aimlessly. I'm am baffled by the 3 1/2 star average rating. Even for free I feel a little ripped off.

    Waste of time to read

Good plot that never was developed well. Very poor flow and inconsistencies. It does not appear that this book was even edited.

This is a quick easy read. Short story but it kept me interested and on the treadmill just a little bit longer than I had planned!

    short easy to read

Juvenile writing, unbelievable plot. Obvious errors such as the IRS appraising the property and assessing property taxes.

    Ridiculous!

This book read like someone's strange dream. Unconnected and disjointed. The premise of a good book, however, needs a great deal of polish, and an editor. No foul language or sex. I would not recommend, and will not buy more from this author.

    Huh?

Ok. So she falls through the floor lands on a bunch of skeletons, but she is in the basement where the new washer and drier are.....but no one has seen this pile of bones before? And her mom says " oh its the servants". How did she know? And what happened to those remains? And if I was going to hide out in a secret house no one even knew was there for 80 yrs....thinking I would not be in the attic, i would be in the master bedroom. People just forgot this house was ever there?? Really? The servants had no friends or family to come look for them?
Cute story, read it in a night, but too many questions left unaswered.

    Bad

Story was unbelievable. Author should have done some research on the irs. Way too many factual errors. Felt like it was written by a kid who didn't know much about real estate law or basic tax law.

    Wonderful mystery

I really enjoyed reading this short story. It was simple and yet there were so many twists and turn in it to keep me reading till the very end.

    Enjoyed

I really enjoyed the story, especially with the quirky relationship between the two main characters. It was fun to try and solve the riddles with them. Some of the narrative was a bit clunky and some word choices made the story get stuck a few times instead of flowing. I really did enjoy this read, though.

Decent story but written by a middle schooler

Honestly, this was a decent story, but it was probably written by a kid in middle school. The story jumped from one adventure to another and didn't really explain anything. It was incredibly short, I finished it in an afternoon. On top of that, the writer kept calling the mom "Zo" instead of her full name "Zoey" that was incredibly annoying. Yes, it is a nickname, fine, but not during the narration. The interaction between the mom and daughter was not realistic either. However, it really did have a good idea behind it and I really did want to finish it because of that.

This book had the potential of being a fun read and a good mystery.  However, the writing was so scattered and broken up.  No flow of events.  Just really poorly written.  So glad I got it when it was free... would have been upset if I had spent money on it.  Guess you get what you pay for.

What a light, humorous, zany Mother/Daughter team in a well written read. They stumble their way in and out of any situation. Loved the different twist on a Romance Suspense book. Very little romance which is good
