Overview

Gabby gets her fair share of frights at a country carnival in this spooky Creepover tale.

Adventurous Gabby Carter is excited to visit her best friend Sydney in Sydney’s new town in Iowa. Gabby is wondering what they’re going to do, surrounded by cornfields, when they discover an amazing carnival full of kids their age…and two very cute boys. But then strange things start happening at the fair: the Tilt-a-Whirl spins a little too quickly, and the eyes of the painted face on the funhouse follow Gabby. Gabby can’t believe she’s the one begging cautious Sydney to leave the carnival—but Sydney won’t leave! Can Gabby convince Sydney they don’t want to find out how haunted this carnival truly is?

This roller coaster of a story is rated a Level 4 on the Creep-o-Meter.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
Ever since Gabby Carter’s best friend Sydney moved from San Francisco to Iowa, Gabby has looked forward to visiting Sydney and finding out what it’s like to live in the country. When her aunt picks her up at the airport and drives her to Sydney’s house, Gabby is thrilled to see that a country fair lights up the night. But the next day, the girls find only abandoned fairgrounds with broken down rides and boarded up game booths. They find a flyer that promises free rides for “kids week,” which happens to be that very week, with two nights left. That evening, Gabby and Sydney arrive at the fairgrounds to find the carnival in full swing, as if the whole fair had been rebuilt in one day. Puzzled and intrigued, the girls take full advantage of the free rides, food, and games, at the same time wondering why the same man seems to be running all the rides and booths. When they meet a group of boys and girls their age, Gabby and Sydney pair up with some cute boys, promising to meet them at the mall the next day. But the boys never show up, and when Gabby and Sydney get to the fair the last night, they find out why. One of the other girls explains to Gabby that if they stay past midnight, they can never leave. But Sydney does not want to go, and when they’re separated, it appears that Gabby may not reach her in time to explain the consequences. The author deliberately leaves the ending vague, making this tale even more eerie. Tweens who enjoy this kind of scare will appreciate the chill factor and will want to check out more books in the series “You’re Invited to a Creepover.” Reviewer: Magi Evans; Ages 8 to 11.

Meet the Author

A lifelong night owl, P.J. Night often works furiously into the wee hours of the morning, writing down spooky tales and dreaming up new stories of the supernatural and otherworldly. Although P.J.’s whereabouts are unknown at this time, we suspect the author lives in a drafty, old mansion where the floorboards creak when no one is there and the flickering candlelight creates shadows that creep along the walls. We truly wish we could tell you more, but we’ve been sworn to keep P.J.’s identity a secret…and it’s a secret we will take to our graves!
