The Righteous Ones

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
Urban folk up-and-comer Toshi Reagon delivers her sharp observations of modern life with a melodic voice that's steeped in the sounds of blackness, from chanting call-and-response to driving urban rhythms. In her most focused and pointed recording yet, this daughter of Southern civil rights activists Cordell and Bernice Johnson Reagon (founding members of the Freedom Singers; the senior Ms. Reagon is a moving force behind the a cappella group Sweet Honey in the Rock) involves the audience in her cause. Even in the realm of the personal, Reagon's insights and stories framed in the twists and turns of rattling rap ("I'm Just an Egg Don't Mind Me") and folk rock balladry ...

All Music Guide - Steve Kurutz
Once again, Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter Toshi Reagan, who recently signed to independent Razor & Tie, delivers a fine, if unremarkeable, record. On the opener, "Real Love," Reagan sings with an authority and urgency that demands her voice be heard before the track cascades into a funky instrumental rave-up. Yet, despite the solid instrumentation and Reagan's obvious vocal gifts, The Righteous Ones just isn't the melodically memorable, focused album that she needs to release in order to break out of the underground and into the mainstream consciousness.
