Overview

Drummond's (1778-1865) essay was submitted one day too late to be eligible for the 1837 contest sponsored by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, but exerted no small influence on the Victorian animal protection movement, and affords modern scholars valuable insights into the history of animal ethics and the world of animal protection in the earlier 19th century, say Preece (political philosophy, Wilfrid Laurier U., Ontario) and Li (history, U. of Cambridge). They explain that it is marked by impressive scholarship, original argument, and genuine compassion for the animal creation, and bears the Unitarian outlook and distinctive individuality of its author, who was a Unitarian minister, a controversial theologian, and a poet of some fame in Ireland. The text is double spaced. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
