Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Jacob Gilles
This book is exciting even though it is difficult to follow at times; however, the glossary helped explain the meaning of some of the more difficult-to-understand words. Overall the plot and ending are excellent. The character Ernie is left hanging, and Max's dad isn't a great father. If you like action and fantasy, this is the book for you.
VOYA - Rebecca Moore
In this second volume of the Grey Griffins series, eleven-year-old Max, scion of two powerful Knights Templar families and current Guardian of the archaic and powerful Codex, is again beset by monsters. It seems that the evil Morgan LeFey, defeated in Revenge of the Shadow King (Orchard, 2005/VOYA February 2005) by Max and his three best friends, the Grey Griffins, is out for revenge. It all starts when Max's billionaire father invites the Griffins to Scotland for Christmas, and throughout their holiday, the youth have hair's-breadth escapes from kobolds, bone crunchers, werewolves, and other mythical beasts. They eventually learn that Morgan is after the all-powerful Spear of Ragnarok, which according to prophecy, only Max can reassemble. When Morgan kidnaps Max's father to force Max's hand, Max must decide whether the fate of one man-even if it is his father-is worth the fate of millions. The ambiguous endgame leaves no doubt of a third installment to come. In the style of many online fantasy games, Benz and Lewis cobble together an everything-but-the-kitchen-sink fantasy world, throwing in Count Dracula (a misunderstood good guy), a Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous castle, descendants of King Arthur, high-tech planes that can become submarines, Magic: The Gathering-type monsters, ancient prophecies-readers will get the picture. Still the characters are well drawn and their relationships and feelings ring true, especially Max's opinions about his newly divorced parents. This formulaic but well-written fantasy is sure to appeal to the gaming crowd or any reader more interested in nonstop action than in world-building.
School Library Journal

Gr 5–8
In The Revenge of the Shadow King (Scholastic, 2005), the Grey Griffins had to work together to save their hometown, Avalon, and the rest of the world from certain annihilation at the hands of Morgan Le Fey. This time, the four friends travel to Scotland where they…have to save the world from certain annihilation at the hands of Morgan Le Fey. Narratives that would be fun with groups of friends in role-playing games come across here as trite and contrived. The surfeit of strung-together clichés and hyperbole stifles the story so much that it becomes practically unreadable.

Kirkus Reviews
The war between good and evil is entangled in the war between Max Sumner's estranged parents in this sequel to The Revenge of the Shadow King (2006). Max and his friends, the Grey Griffins, are off to spend Christmas at Sumner Castle, Max's billionaire father's home in Scotland. Before they even arrive at the castle, the Griffins are embroiled once again in the faerie war when their plane is attacked by Kobolds. Though Max's father doesn't have any time to spend with the children when they finally arrive, they have plenty to fill their days: searching for a mysterious witching well, fighting loathsome Bog Beasts and questing for the Spear of Ragnarok. When Max's father is kidnapped by minions of the evil "Morgan LaFey," Max's loyalty is torn between the forces of light and his need to rescue his father. This amalgam of Norse mythology, Arthurian legends, the Dracula story and others is chaotic and somewhat incoherent-but the fast-paced adventure and slightly gross-out magic will keep some readers enthralled. (Fantasy. 9-12)

Captivating and I was hooked even more...

The Rise of the Black Wolf was more captivating than The Revenge of the Shadow King. The characteristics of the characters immediately rushed back to me, and I was so excited to continue the journey. Better than the first and guaranteed not to bore you. I absolutely loved this continuing story.

: Chris's super awesome book review no. 1

The STORY Is about 4 friends are on a quest to find the spear of Ragnorok and to stop the black wolf army and save max's dad from the black witch, Morgan Lefay.
They will encounter many monsters along the way such as bog beast, bone crushers, werewolves, fireball pixies, zombies, krobals, and goblins. They will meet new people like Athena, Augustus, Lord Sumner, and Dracula. They will face tests like never before.
My favorite person is Dracula because he was able to fight off the black wolf army with his pet dragon and defeat the black witch.
That is why I advise you to read the entire series including Brimstone Key and Treasure Hunters and I hope you enjoy it.

    The Adventurous Grey Griffins continue

I think this book was a very exciting book. This book had drama, adventure, and thrill to make it, in my opinion, the 2nd best book ever 'I thought the Revenge of the Shadow King was a little better'.

The Greatest So Far Out Of The Series!!!!

A friend of mine who is a librarian at my school and is always recommending books to me. Recommended the first book of this series saying I would not be able to put this book down. What she meant was while I was reading I would hate myself if I maked the page and put the book down. But I read throught the whole entire book in less then an hour. Then I read the book fluently aloud to the whole entire library. Then throughout the school year I would periodicaly check the book out again to read again, again, and again.

Benz & Lewis do it again!!!

As a fifth grade teacher, I was extremely pleased with the second installment of the Grey Griffin series. I will admit that I was a little bit worried after I read some of the other reviews before I started reading this book, but they were so wrong!! There was plenty of suspense and shocking moments throughout the entire novel. I just told my students this morning that I finished the second one over the weekend and that it is a definite must read. I can't wait for the third book!!!

    What happened?!?!?!

The first book was great, but this one was long and boring until the end. The ending leaves hopes for a great sequel, but this one... only one thumb up.

    THIS BOOK IS AWESOME

I read the first shortly before the second came out and it was great. When I heard the second came out just a month or two later I knew I had to have it. If possible the second was even better than the first was in my opinion.I cant wait until the third comes out because I bet it will be the best one yet.
