Overview

Every story must begin somewhere. For the warrior who would come to be known as the fearsome Red Shadow, the story began in a forgotten glade deep in the land of Tressor. It was there that a pair of trackers, eager to retrieve a lost slave, instead found an orphaned malthrope. Had it been a human, it might have been treated with compassion, but in the eyes of human society a malthrope was a monster, a mix of fox and man believed to be a murderer and thief by its very nature. The beast was to be sold for a handful of silver, but fate intervened in the form of an old blind slave named Ben. Under the learned hand of the one human who believed in his potential, the young malthrope would instead be given the wisdom to take his first steps on the long journey to his destiny.

The Rise of the Red Shadow chronicles the early life of one of the most mysterious figures of the The Book of Deacon trilogy, the creature called Lain. It tells of his years working and learning on a Tresson plantation until a dark day of vengeance and bloodshed finally set him free. From there you will follow as he finds his place in the world, learning what it is to be a malthrope, and turning to the purpose that will guide him for the rest of his days. It is a story of love, hate, and lessons hard-learned, revealing the painful choices one must make to become the hero the world needs.

This self published author never lets his readers down. With The Rise of the Red Shadow, Joseph Lallo gives his readers an indepth look into the enigmatic character Lain. Mr. Lallo tells Lain's story from childhood, a grim story for such a young character. You learn how Lain becomes the powerful, skilled assassin he is today in The Book of Deacon trilogy. Along the way, you may cringe, shudder, or even weep at what Lain goes through. There is laughter, love, and friendships that beautfully balance this novel against the darkness. Add magic, dragons, and this a definite win. Very well written, and helps readers fully understand how Lain came to be who he is.

Excellent read, with some very moving scenes in the development of the main character. A worthy addition to the Book of Deacon series, which I'll now want to read again.

A great book.  I have read the Deacon books and enjoyed them.  I was always curious about the Lian.   The growth of his character in this book is thoughtful while all he endures is pain.  An amazing building of  This character.  I would love to see a sequel to this.

I didn't think my heart could break anymore than it did when reading The Book of Deacon but it did. This was a heart wrenching look at how Lain came to be the character we were introduced to in The Book of Deacon trilogy. While you know that to become the Red Shadow Lain had to have had a pretty hard start in life, this book spells it out through a story that is very well written. Bravo Mr. Lallo, my heart is still hurting for Lain as I write this review. I truly came to love this character!

Continuing his story line to fill in the beginnings of characters we have already grown to love. Insightful depth of characters woven with action and story. Great read!

kept my interest through the whole book. Since the Shadow carries on to the next book, The Book of Deacons (1st in trilogy) I can hardly wait to get started. I have all of the trilogy already.

This story was a great prequel for the Book of Deacon Trilogy. I enjoyed all of these books. Red Shadow, among his many names, is a fascinating character.

The transformation that Lain makes is an incredible thing to witness. He starts off with the qualities of a hero, but gradually you see him burry thos things deep within himself. Lain in the end is exactly who you would expect him to become after the journey he takes. FREAKING LOVE YOU LAIN.

The way this book filled out Lain's story. The character's story was well-told and did much to explain his behavior in the trilogy. I think I'd suggest others read this first. Still a few typos but nothing too annoying. I really like the setting of this series and hope that the author expands on it in the future.
