Rising King by Shea Berkley:

The summer before Dylan Kennedy's senior year in high school is turning out to be anything but boring. Ridiculously hot girlfriend? Check. Killing evil Dark Souls who suddenly have aspirations of taking over the magical realm of Teag because its protective spell is gone? Check.

Not even Teag's King, Dylan's father, Baun, can stop them. People are dying, and a dark magic that his girlfriend, Kera, received from Baun is growing stronger. Dylan wants to believe Kera is suppressing the darkness that's in her, but every day he sees that control slip just a little more. Baun sends Dylan to find a powerful magic that stop the Dark Souls, a magic so strong that Baun hid it so no one else could use it. What Dylan doesn't expect to find along with it, are consequences that could end the lives of those closest to him.

Keepers of Life 3: The Rising King

I want to start off saying that I have not read the first two books in this series. I actually did this twice - selected two books from Entangled Teen, reading part of the book description and wanting to read it, then finding out that it was the third in the series. This book gives hints at the adventure that had happened before, retelling enough of the story that, if you haven't read the first one, you aren't confused, but leaving enough questions unanswered that you feel a need to read the first two (at 25% in, I had already purchased them).

The story was well-written, very interesting and powerful (the flip between 1st and 3rd person was sometimes jarring, but I understand why the author chose to tell the story that way). The characters were a lot of fun to read about and I really enjoyed them - except Lucinda is a tad frustrating to deal with (I believe that was the point). When things happened to them, it was very hard not to feel the pain they were feeling, the excitement, the fear.

The romance in the story is clean enough that I could, in good conscience, recommend the book to a younger teenager. It does, however, have moments of annoyance where Dylan's love for Kera (and vice versa) gets in the way of what goes on in the story (I guess that sometimes happens, though, huh?).

I definitely recommend and I can't wait to read the first two.

Note: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

"Received and ARC for an honest review"

What an amazing surprise. I have recently reviewed mostly Contemporary Romance books so when I received this ARC and found out it was the third and final book in the series I was a bit taken aback and skeptical about it. I decided to give it my full and bought the previous two installments and what I found got me reading the three books in a row during the weekend. They were that good!!

This final book concludes an awesome series. One I beg you to just buy it and read, I'm sure you'll be looking for me to thank me for the recommendation. Shea Berkley just became an author I'm going to follow fir anything she writes.
