Academy Award nominees Paul Giamatti and David Strathairn square off as incumbent Illinois senator Stephen Douglas and rising legislator Abraham Lincoln, respectively, in this reenactment of their historical 1858 debates. As conveyed from the perspective of Adele Douglas, Stephen's wife, the conversations and debates give way to a more perplexed and frustrated Stephen than has historically been portrayed. Strathairn plays Lincoln with calm and sincerity, but it is the energy and vitality of Giamatti (Emmy Award winner as John Adams) that dominate the performance. The stage direction and sound effects integrate well with the acting to create a rewarding audio experience for any listener.
