Overview

It's Hazel's thirtieth birthday and she has everything she's ever wanted: a kickass job, a dream apartment in New York City, and the perfect boyfriend—who's just days away from proposing. Hazel thinks she's happy but isn't quite ready to settle down. So when her most far-fetched fantasy enters the realm of the possible, shouldn't she drop everything to see it through?

The morning after her birthday, Hazel boards a flight to L.A. only to get the surprise of her life. When she's bumped up to first class, extra legroom and free drinks are absolutely the last things on her mind when she catches sight of her seatmate: her all-time biggest celebrity crush, rock star Finn Schiller! Only the night before she'd confessed her infatuation with the gorgeous musician, and her boyfriend joked that she had a free pass if she ever met him. Hazel can't believe fate has actually thrown them together.

Even more unbelievable is that during the flight they genuinely connect. Finn likes her uncensored cursing and wicked sense of humor, and that she's unlike all of his groupies; Hazel likes his killer looks, ripped physique, and soulful music. But what started as a fantasy quickly becomes a real attraction, and after a dream date and taste of the rock-star life with Finn in L.A., Hazel is forced to examine the track her life is on. Indulging in a passionate affair with a rock star seems crazy—but could she ever forgive herself if she walked away from her wildest dream coming true? And is her wildest dream the stuff that happiness is made of?

A lively novel about a down-to-earth New York City girl who suddenly finds herself in a rock 'n' roll Cinderella fantasy, The Rock Star in Seat 3A is seasoned with Jill Kargman's signature wit and hilarious dialogue. This is a fairy-tale romance with a twist.

Editorial Reviews

USA Today
“The Rock Star in Seat 3A is funny and irreverent, a brash and appealing account of a long-devoted fan-girl and how she copes with her rock idol fantasy come true.”
Bookreporter.com
Fantasy, fiction and the sex appeal of rock god Finn Schiller are the three key ingredients in the cocktail recipe for this summer’s must-read beach book: THE ROCK STAR IN SEAT 3A.
Kirkus Reviews
A just-30 video game junkie and marketing guru gets her world totally rocked when she starts an affair with her American idol. Kargman's (Sometimes I Feel Like a Nut, 2011, etc.) latest confection is so frothy that even fans may have a hard time swallowing its Diablo Cody–esque hipster jive. In essence, if you liked Nick Hornby's Juliet, Naked but wish it had more of the emotional intensity of Sex and the City, this is the book for you. Our heroine, such as she is, is one Hazel Lavery, a fast-talking, video game–addicted NYC hipster with a killer job working for Badass Games, a Brooklyn-based shop whose latest bestseller, Pimps N' Ho's Volume V, is about to hit the store shelves. She even has the romance side covered, with a so-cozy-it-hurts relationship with gorgeous chef Wylie, complete with multiple nicknames (a little Doodleby McClintock, ladies?). But it turns out the path of love turns a wee bit crooked when Hazel is chosen to fly to L.A. to set up the big opening bash for Pimps N' Ho's, and she's seated next to her all-time-favorite-OMG-crush, rock god Finn Schiller, during the disarmingly bumpy flight. "I was lilting over each booming crest as if I might capsize, but the elation of my ride with Finn got me past the fact that I was emotionally cheating on Wylie by suppressing every desire to dive across the armrest and rape Finn like those shameless Midwestern teens shrieking for the Jonas Brothers to deflower them," Hazel admits. Surprising no one, Hazel and Finn connect on a, like, deeply emotional level, you know? And the whole quivering scene unfolds with tedious predictability. Finn's gloomy lyrics and all the "Oh, god, Hazel" moments in the world can't help float this lead zeppelin.

Summary of this book: Girl meets music idol. Girl leaves boyfriend for idol. Girl has lots of sex with idol. Girl is unfulfilled. Girl's perfect boyfriend waits around for her. The end. Practically written by a teenager, with lots of made of words, cursing and "OMFGs." Don't waste your money.

Just finished reading it! So smart and fun. I love that the protagonist isn't the typical sorority blonde and that the author really explores how hard and conflicted women often feel in relationships. I looked forward so much to reading time!! So fun!!! Can't wait to read more of Jill Kargman's stuff!!!

This is a good book for those lazy summer days by the pool drinking pina coladas. It is cute and predictable but ultimately a very easy and fun read.

What happens when fantasy and reality collide? The Rock Star in Star 3A. This book is a fun exploration of what happens when fantasies become a reality...and what happens to life as it had been. One especially endearing part of this book is the quote that appears above each chapter. Rock on! I received this book for free from the Chick Lit is Not Dead blog give away.

What would you do if you were seated next to your dream musician and the one you were granted the "free pass" by your boyfriend/girlfriend? Well Hazel was about to find out when her dream rock star crush, Finn Schiller, was seated next to her in seat 3A. I literally read this novel in one sitting because I thought it was so fun and original. I love stories that take you to the place of fantasy and address the age old question: is the grass greener on the other side? Hop onto the plane in seat 3B and be prepared for a wild ride. I rate this book 4 stars and look forward to reading more by Jill Kargman.

I really liked this story. Everyone has their own fantasy, it was interesting to see how one person handled theirs. Very funny and thought provoking. My daughter suggested this story to me. Two generations loved it.
