Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Meredith Kiger
In honor of the 200th anniversary of the writing of the “Star Spangled Banner”, the author retells the story of how Frances Scott Key was inspired to write the poem that has become our national anthem. Mr. Key, a resident of Baltimore, and a friend were sent on a mission by President Madison to rescue an American physician held captive on a British ship at the beginning of the War of 1812. While on the ship, they were informed that Fort McHenry in Baltimore Harbor would be attacked by the British and that the American flag would no longer be flying there. As he awaited the outcome of the attack on a ship nearby, Mr. Key was inspired to write the poem “The Star Spangled Banner” upon seeing the American flag still waving the next morning. The poem was printed and distributed around Baltimore and was soon set to music. The bold illustrations, set mostly at night, give the reader the sense of the fury of the fight and the pride on seeing the flag that inspired the now famous lines. The book does not indicate when it officially became our national anthem but focuses on the patriotism the song inspires. A CD of the song sung by Jo Dee Messina is included with the book. Reviewer: Meredith Kiger, Ph.D.; Ages 7 to 9.
