Overview

If the name Rogana Records doesn't ring a bell, there's a good reason why: the label didn't really exist. William "Hoss" Allen was a disc jockey, music publisher, TV presenter, and record man working in Nashville in the mid-'60s who ran a small record label, Hermitage Records. When Allen began finding more talent than Hermitage had the resources to release, he founded Rogana Records as a production company that would lease its masters to other labels rather than distribute product itself. Two dozen Rogana productions are featured on this archival collection from SPV Records, and while the company didn't score many hits or establish many stars, there are a few notable names and pleasant surprises to be found on this disc. The great Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown cut some tunes for Rogana, and his emphatic version of "Have You Ever Been Mistreated" appears here, while the Texas guitarist Johnny Copeland is represented in two numbers that bridge the gap between blues and soul. Elvis Presley sideman Scotty Moore teamed up with Jimmy Stuart for a casual but down-home country-blues track called "Macon," cut as a tribute to Otis Redding, and the underrated guitarist and singer Art Grayson contributes four sterling numbers to this set. Dottie Clark's sassy "All Woman" comes from the only single the woman would ever cut, and Tiny Watkins, who fared little better (releasing four singles prior to his untimely passing), sounds fine on the soulful "Words of a Dying Man." The rest of this set is a mixed bag, but it's all rare enough that hardcore soul collectors looking for vintage material that hasn't been anthologized to death will certainly find a handful of choice items on The Rogana Story.
