Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
11/04/2013
Large and lavish with remarkable color photos of both food and family, the author undertook this project after her husband lost the presidential election last year. There are many vignettes describing family events including stories from Romney's own childhood, her time as a young mother, and the more recent family vacations with her many grandchildren. The recipes reflect a taste for casual and often kid-friendly cuisine, for instance, "the Fluffernutter Sandwich", a standby created when Romney's five sons were young, which consists of peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff on white bread. Romney says, "My boys affectionately call this ‘yucky bread,' which I assure you is their term of fond endearment." The recipes are mostly organized by occasion, such as the traditional apricot coffee cake, eaten every Christmas morning. For her husband's birthday, Romney always prepares a dish she names "Mitt's Meat Loaf Cakes." Then there is the "Lake Menu," a series of summer recipes prepared on family vacations at the Romney's Lake Winnipesaukee house. With 34 mouths to feed including those of 22 growing grandchildren, all the adults pitch in on the meals: "Dinner is a big deal. We all sit down together at three picnic tables." Lots of easy and tasty recipes made with love in this endearing cookbook. Color photos. (Oct.)

This book is more than just a cookbook!
It is about gathering families together...around the table :)

This book gives us insight into the Mitt and Ann Romney family and how they have gathered around the table on special days, Sundays, and holidays.

Ann talks about her family including stories about being around the kitchen counter with her mom, how it was to raise five boys, and making it a priority to spend time as a family.

My favorite story in this section is the day she had come home to find that her baby had had a heyday in the Fluff jar...there is a really fun picture of Fluff all over this child's face, hands, and clothes.

She also talks about the traditions they have as a family such as keeping her Welsh heritage alive, birthday celebrations, and summer vacations.

One of the stories you will read in this section is about the year Mitt's dad, George Romney, traveled to the home of each of his grandchildren on their birthday and cooked their favorite meal for them...and he was in his eighties...wow!

And we get to read about their holiday traditions of Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.

Ann shares with us her love of the Fourth of July, from the family picnic, to the fireworks, to the parade held in Wolfeboro with its lawn-chair brigade...fun story!

And did you notice the picture on the front of the cover with the children eating the watermelon...this is just one of the activities the Romney family does in their summer "Romney Olympics" tradition.

Filled with almost 100 pictures of the family...including parents, grandparents, children and grandchildren.

    And well over 100 recipes...

This book is truly a wonderful gift from the Romney family table to your family table.

Romney Family Table ~ LOVE IT!

I love cookbooks and read them like novels. When I received this book, I opened it up to glance through it and ended up sitting down with a cup of tea and reading it cover to cover. Enjoyed Ann Romney's warm style and the stories of her family. The recipes are wonderful, too. I actually baked the pumpkin bread (with chocolate chips!)and it was easy and delicious. I also appreciated the quality of the book itself. It's a nice size, the recipes are easy to read, and the many color photos are beautiful.

Thoroughly enjoyable reading, this family is an inspiration to all.

I truly enjoyed the Romney family stories in the book. Then, I started making some of the recipes. What I like about them is that the ingredients are those I have in my pantry. I've made the Chocolate Chip Cookies, Beef Stew, and Meat Loaf. I'm looking forward to trying others soon. After reading about the Romney family I've come to the conclusion that I'd love having them as neighbors, they truly are "America's Family".
