Overview

This two-disc, 41-track collection from the Chrome Dreams label claims to contain the inspiration for the early-'80s, mascara-heavy, post-punk movement known as goth, and it makes a fairly strong case for itself, as it's hard not to imagine an androgynous looking waif with a jet black mane of stiff hair, ripped fishnets, and a leather jacket over a poet shirt, hot-boxing a clove cigarette out a second story window blaring Stravinsky's "Infernal Dance of King Kastchei from the Firebird." The aptly titled Roots of Goth offers up a nice mix of classical (Berlioz), blues (Robert Johnson), rock (Screaming Lord Sutch), pop (Mel Tormé), and country (Sons of the Pioneers) tunes, and while they might not sound much like something by the Cure, Bauhaus, the Damned, or Siouxsie & the Banshees, they're nevertheless cut from the same bloody cloth, and were conceived beneath the same night sky.
