Overview

You may know Bill Whelan from his high-steppin', chart-toppin', Grammy-Award-winnin' Celtic extravaganza "Riverdance." But the versatile composer has been busy. This four-CD box gathers all four of Whelan's major works into one smart package, starting with the RIVERDANCE album, which spent over a half a year at the top of the Billboard World Music chart thanks, in part, to the divine voice of Katie MacMahon and furious fiddling of Eileen Ivers. Then there's Whelan's orchestral SEVILLE SUITE, a stirring work commissioned in 1992 for the World Expo. SOME MOTHER'S SON is the soundtrack to the film based on the 1981 hunger strikes by jailed members of the Irish Republican Army. Perhaps most intriguing is THE ROOTS OF RIVERDANCE, a companion CD of source and Irish folk material instrumental to the creation of the million-selling phenomenon.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Bret Love
The increased popularity of Celtic music in the late '90s/early '00s gives purists cause for concern, which is why some Irish music lovers may have divided feelings on this lively CD from Bill Whelan, who composed the music for Riverdance. It's not that the songs aren't impressive or dynamic in scope -- the better songs here rank among the best modern Celtic compositions to date -- but several songs find Ireland's grand musical traditions being watered down for easier consumption. The more minimalist songs work best, and when talents like uilleann pipe master Davy Spillane, bouzouki virtuoso Andy Irvine, and fiddler Eileen Ivers start interweaving melodies, the effects can be chilling. But it's also hard to deny the bombastic effectiveness of a song like "The Countess Cathleen." When traditional musicians, full orchestra, and Riverdancers start turning up the heat, even purists will find it impossible to keep their feet from tapping.
