Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

This Rough Guidewill familiarize potential travelers with the what, when, where, and how of many areas and countries of the African continent. It's more of an overview than a travel guide needed for an actual visit. The book has five sections, with the "where to go" section offering information on 41 of the 55 countries on or just off Africa's mainland. Presenting almanac-type information, as well as citing places of interest, and offering recommendations, restrictions, and routes into and out of the country, this section also lists relevant books and web sites for each of the countries. Another section offers information geared to the nuts and bolts of planning a trip to Africa: the needed papers, climates, costs, possible accommodations, staying healthy and out of trouble, and communication in Africa, all of which in fact might vary from one country to another. The Rough Guides series includes books focused on particular African countries, though not all. This overview will do in a pinch, but consult more detailed sources if Africa is in your future.
