There is comprehensive coverage of all the major sights – and many off the beaten track - from the northern tip of Hokkaido down to the islands of Okinawa, closer to Taiwan than Tokyo. All this is accompanied by in-depth coverage of Japan’s history, religions, arts, movies and music plus a discussion of environmental issues. There are maps of all the main towns and tourist destinations, together with separate colour maps of the Tokyo subway system and the rail network in Osaka.

Save your money...this is REALLY a Rough guide

I was doing some research and used Lonely Planet and The Rough Guide to Japan side by side.

The Rough Guide to Japan is very frustrating to use and found that for looking up information Lonely Planet was an easier guide to use. For a tourist that is going to Japan having the Japanese characters is a must which The Rough Guide lacks. They do have a few of the characters but nothing like Lonely Planet. Of course in Japan you will see signage both in English and Japanese but it is always helpful to have the Japanese to make your life easier. Plus if you get lost it will be a lot easier to point to the Japanese and have one of the locals help you.

I wouldn't recommend this guide unless this is the only guide left and you are leaving for Japan tomorrow. Before buying any guide book, contact JNTO (tourism bureau for Japan) and they can send you maps and brochures on most of the popular areas and some rural areas for free.
