The Rough Guide's Asian Beat Box

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Chris Nickson
Asia covers a lot of ground -- far more than there is on this box, in fact. This might be better titled Indian Beat Box, since it covers the music of that country very well. Asia covers a lot of ground -- far more than there is on this box, in fact. This might be better titled Indian Beat Box, since it covers the music of that country very well. There's not so much of the two classical styles, but in terms of popular music (and the Indian diaspora) it's extremely strong. While Bhangra was (and still is) an Indian folk style, it's really taken off in Britain, as has the Asian Underground, which began life there, and is thoroughly covered. The Bollywood film industry is the world's biggest, and as music is an integral part of the films, the soundtracks do roaring business, as well as creating a specific style that mixes and matches so many disparate musics. The Music of India offers more of an introduction to the classical styles, but it's limited because it also tries to cover the various folk styles -- and it does a good job. So, if you work around the box's title, you receive a good dose of music for your money.
