Overview

Chopin's Nocturnes are the quintessence of night music -- meditative, poetic, and poised between romantic yearnings and the melancholy wanderings of the solitary mind. Their emotional richness and melodic beauty have made them favorites of pianists since their composition, but of all the great performers who have recorded them, Arthur Rubinstein stands apart. His approach finds a near-ideal balance between rhapsodic effusion and introspective restraint; there is a pervasive aura of spontaneity, yet Rubinstein has clearly shaped and phrased the music with the utmost care. The set of 19 nocturnes reissued here -- following Chopin's wishes, Rubinstein never performed or recorded the two unpublished nocturnes that fill out many recorded sets -- dates from 1965-67 and was his third account of the music. As such, it not only bears the fruits of his mature insights, but was also the first to take advantage of stereo recording. Remastered for the complete, 94-disc Rubinstein Collection, this classic set is now available separately with the benefits of better-than-ever sound and deluxe packaging. It may not be news, but it's as true as ever: This is a recording that belongs in every classical music library.
