The Rufus Chronicles: Another Autumn (4 Cassettes)

5.0 1
by C.W. W. Gusewelle, Ira Claffey (Reader)

"The Rufus Chronicles" began as a single column C.W. Gusewelle wrote on the parallel nature of a boy settling into manhood, and a puppy growing up to be a dog. Here, Gusewelle speaks poignantly, but without a trace of sappiness, about what he has learned about himself and the world through his relationship with Rufus, his loyal hunting companion and friend.

Library Journal - Library Journal
Ira Claffey does an outstanding reading of Gusewelle's skillful work about his relationship with a Brittany Spaniel over his 12-year life span. Rufus became a regular topic of Gusewelle's newspaper column in the Kansas City Star. These tapes are an exploration of the nature of Rufus as a hunting dog and his life with this family. An accomplished writer, Gusewelle is particularly eloquent in describing scenery and his feelings about his much-loved hunting events. Unfortunately, many listeners will have a hard time relating to a man who can almost whimsically move his family to Paris, boarding his young puppy in a kennel for a year, and who seems to live primarily for the start of hunting season. What seems to be a "good ole boy" approach to his use of Rufus for breeding is loathesome to many who are concerned about pure-bred animals. Nevertheless, the tapes are nicely produced with good music in spots, and Claffey's comfortable voice is understandable and has a fine range of inflection. Libraries serving large numbers of game hunters may be interested.--Carolyn Alexander, Brigadoon Lib., Salinas, CA

This is a rare treat. The story is narrated is a great voice and the story is completely captivating. The hunting dog goes from being a pup and out of control to becoming a hunting dog with all the good and bad at both ends of that spectrum; and family life fits in too. If you love dogs, obviously it's great, it will have you laughing out load and just generally feeling better about life! I just didn't want it to end.
