Overview

As bullets whiz by, walls crumble, and explosions throw you to the ground, the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before. In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines where they will experience heart-pounding missions across diverse locations including Paris, Tehran and New York...

Since 2002, EA's series of Battlefield games have set the standard for realism and ambition. And in Autumn 2011, with the global release of the hotly anticipated Battlefield 3, they're raising the bar even higher. Battlefield 3 will be the most authentic, vivid, all-action first person shooter ever.

To be published alongside the game, Battlefield 3: The Russian is also best in class - the first time that a games publisher has worked so closely with an internationally bestselling author.

Never before has a tie-in book benefitted from this level of collaboration from the creative team behind the game itself. Nor has it been written by a thriller writer with such a strong track record and reputation.

Displaying all of McNab's trademark grit, authenticity and insight, Battlefield 3: The Russian is a scorching top-of-the-line military thriller and a heart-stopping race against time.

Prepare to be blown away...

ANDY MCNAB joined the infantry as a boy soldier. In 1984 he was 'badged' as a member of 22 SAS Regiment and was involved in both covert and overt special operations worldwide. During the Gulf War he commanded Bravo Two Zero, a patrol that, in the words of his commanding officer, 'will remain in regimental history for ever'. Awarded both the Distinguished Conduct Medal (DCM) and Military Medal (MM) during his military career, McNab was the British Army's most highly decorated serving soldier when he finally left the SAS in February 1993. He wrote about his experiences in three books: the phenomenal bestseller Bravo Two Zero, Immediate Action and Seven Troop.

He is the author of the bestselling Nick Stone thrillers. Besides his writing work, he lectures to security and intelligence agencies in both the USA and UK. He is a patron of the Help for Heroes campaign.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Electronic Arts' just released Battlefield 3 video game is already generating tsunamis of interest among gamers. This tie-in novel possesses the same vividness of the game. Author Andy McNab isn't just an accomplished author (Bravo Two Zero; Immediate Action); he's also a former infantryman and covert agent who served with honor in the Gulf War. In fact, he was the British Army's most highly decorated serving soldier when he left the military in 1993. A four-star military thriller; a mass market paperback and NOOK Book original.

    McNab May Be a Fraud...

McNab claims to have had military experience. But as military adviser on the Battlefield 3 video game he allows truly epic errors into the "simulation" such as helicopters with more armor than main battle tanks and mechanics continuously repairing helos while they're in flight.

His amateurish perspective on modern warfare creeps into the novel version of Battlefield 3 as well. One might think that an actual combat would be able to pen more convincing battle scenes but alas, that is not the case. The writing is wooden and the combat narratives read like a comic book.

One can see a direct connection between McNab's views on modern combat in both the video game version of Battlefield 3 and the novel. Since, as military adviser to BF3 developer DICE, he saw fit to allow helos to sustain repeated hits from shoulder launched AA missiles and in light of the novel version's immature writing one must ask the question: has McNab ever actually been in the military or is he some high school kid with access to a word processor and too many episodes of the GI Joe cartoon series?

If you're looking for realistic war fiction informed by actual combat experience you'll need to look elsewhere. Perhaps McNab did serve in the military but in light of his advice to DICE and the content of this book he has really hurt his professional reputation in exchange for the use of his good name.

    more from this reviewer

    Pretty darn good!

First, I want to address the comments by the Anonymous person. Why are you judging the book for things that happened in the video game? It makes no sense, so don't go with what that person said.

That being said, this is a pretty good book. It's fast paced, and loosely follows the plotline of the related game. The characters are a bit one dimensional, but it's okay. The action helps cover up that small detracting error.

Overall, I'm glad I read it. If you like anything like Tom Clancy's earlier works, then you'll enjoy this. I hope this helps! =)

I have read the Nick Stone series completely, and I liked the reading here too. Dima is the Russian, a Spetsnaz trained outcast spy with a deep commitment to doing the right thing. The action parts of the reading make the book hard to put down, backing up many times to re-read the action. The US Marine character and his part in the story wasn't as convincing for me, otherwise I would have gone 4 1/2 stars.
Not sure about the previous negative review about McNab, it sounds more like game physics related issues. Maybe CoD needs a book.
    Regards.

Attention to all stupid people leaving stupid comments

Knock it off. People want a legitimate review not some stupid crap that doesn't even make sense. For instance, talking about cheese and corn. What is wrong with you? Go away. And Barnes & Noble, you should really start checking over the reviews. It's annoying to see people not give a legit review of a book. Thank you.
